Psychic long-con scams, MLB t-shirt activism and One Direction + Law & Order

- Dick Wolf, that’s what makes you beautiful. The veteran television producer is reportedly teaming up with former man-bander Zayn Malik, who used to be part of the latest reincarnation of the New Kids on the Block/98 Degrees/Backstreet Boys, a.k.a. One Direction. The pair will reportedly co-produce a series unimaginatively titled “Boys” and centering on the daily drama of life in a man band. The show is written by Sherri Cooper-Landsman and Jennifer Levin, who co-created the TV series “Beauty And The Beast,” as well as producing “Without A Trace.” Wolf has won several Emmys and created “Law And Order,” so this is clearly a high point in his career. “Zayn certainly brings an authentic point of view to this world, where kids are catapulted into fame at a dizzying speed,” NBC president Jennifer Salke said. “On top of our excitement around the creative ideas being discussed, we have a lot of respect for the musical and digital ambitions behind the project.” Wolf’s wife and co-producer, Noelle Wolf, cited “the synergistic potential Zayn brings to the project.” Nothing sounds more Hollywood than the phrase “synergistic potential,” and according to Noelle Wolf, “Casting and original music will be major components, giving the show promotional potential on multiple levels.” In other words, we’re going to make a whole damn lot of money with this project and you had best believe that banking big dollars is going to make us forget the fact that we’re stooping to the level of taking our distinguished, lofty television legacy and mixing it with the career of a man-bander……

- Oh Turkey, are you still at this? Sweden and Austria suggested that you allowing your laws on sex with underage individuals to be exceptionally lax and you responded with not-so-subtle messages on airport digital message boards implying that those countries were ideal destinations for those who wanted to put themselves in danger of being raped…and now this? The latest salvo in the battle across Europe comes from the airport in Vienna, Austria, where police investigating a failed cyberattack on the airport by looking into the authenticity of a claim of responsibility from a Turkish nationalist group. The hacker group "Aslan Neferler Tim" or "Lion Soldiers Team" claims to have launched the attack in response to the "racism" of airport authorities, who refused to issue a group of Turkish nationals emergency visas that would have allowed them to leave the airport and overnight in a hotel after their flight was grounded for technical reasons. Yes, being forced to spend the night in an airport is a reason to launch a subpar cyberattack across international borders, at least for a group of hackers describing themselves as responding to attacks against "Islam and the (Turkish) nation." The major root of this drama is Austria asking the European Union to break off membership negotiations with Turkey, but at this point the two sides just seem to be intent on finding new reasons to beef on a daily basis……..

- Professional athletes making a social or cultural statement is definitely a thing these days, but some battles are more important than others. Sure, everyone is focused on a certain NFL quarterback sitting or kneeling during the national anthem to protest social injustice and police violence and that is important, it’s worth recognizing that a Major League Baseball star is trying to call attention to another important cause and no one is giving it the recognition it so richly deserves. Meet New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard, whose team played a series in Cincinnati this week. Syndergaard used some of his down time away from the field to make a visit to the Cincinnati Zoo and while there, he used his social media accounts to make a very bold statement about one of the zoo’s former residents. That would be Harambe the gorilla, who was shot and killed by zoo staff when he attempted to injure and perhaps eventually kill a small child who had fallen into the gorilla enclosure on account of having ass hats as parents. Syndergaard clearly remembers Harambe and what that ape stood for, which explains why he posted an Instagram photo of himself at the zoo rocking a Harambe shirt. It was a simple gesture that undoubtedly meant a lot to Harambe’s many fans, supporters and family members and it showed that major leaguers can be socially conscious citizens just like their counterparts in the NFL. Here’s hoping other athletes rally around this cause the way they’ve come to support Colin Kaepernick………

- If only she’d seen this one coming. Gina Miller is an (alleged) scam artist accused of stealing more than $1.5 million in cash, jewelry, gift cards and cars from several clients under the guise of being a psychic. The self-described Ohio psychic has been indicted on 28 charges including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, aggravated theft, telecommunications fraud and securing writings by deception. This supposed seer ran a very long con, as the alleged incidents happened between August 2001 and September 2015 at Gina's Psychic Studio near Cleveland. Miller definitely knew how to identify and reel in the big fish, as she netted her seven-figure payday by stealing from just 11 people, people she bamboozled by telling the victims that harm would come to their families if they refused to pay her. It was a decidedly cruel stunt and one that would have tipped off any non-moron to the fact that this woman was less psychic and more scumbag, but apparently it worked and worked well because when investigators finally brought the hammer down on Miller, they seized Louis Vuitton purses, iPhones and computers, as well as Rolex watches and other jewelry. Much to the surprise of no one, Miller's attorney says she'll plead not guilty to stealing a whole lot of money from a very naïve, gullible group of people and while defending those not smart enough to realize what a scam this all was from the start seems a bit unfair in a certain sense, the law mandates that it be done. Here’s hoping Miller uses her psychic abilities to anticipate how the prosecution will make its case against her and outthink them with her brilliant, future-seeing mind………
