Canadian judicial rape ugliness, Aqua needlessly revived and an NFLer becomes a citizen

- The Washington Redskins failed to show up for their Monday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 of the NFL season, but at least Redskins offensive lineman Arie Kouandjio showed up for one of the biggest days of his life. Kouandjio and his family emigrated from Cameroon when he was 6 years old and amazingly, both he and his younger brother Cyrus have reached the NFL. This week, Arie Kouandjio achieved a dream by becoming an American citizen. With a father who survived a civil war near his African village as a child and grew up to have a family of his own that he moved halfway around the world and raised in a new country. Both Arie and his younger brother Cyrus, a starting tackle for Buffalo, ended up graduating from DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, before going on to become the rare pair of siblings who both became professional football players. So even though Arie Kouandjio was inactive for Monday's 38-16 loss to Pittsburgh, he didn’t spend the next day pouting or feeling bad for himself. The second-year lineman has worked at both guard and tackle since training camp opened for the Redskins, so he is a versatile asset and clearly, a guy who is socially and politically conscious. "Before, all I could do is just watch CNN or just watch Fox or just watch; I wasn't a participating member in all decisions," he said. "I [still] can't be the president, which is something that I've always wanted to do, but I can do other things, so it's awesome." Love the enthusiasm and the realization of a dream for you, Arie…….

- This is going to be cannon fodder for the receptacle of despicables who support Mutant Traffic Cone With Arms Donald Trump in his run for president of these here United States. Trump has built his campaign platform with plans of xenophobia, racism, paranoia and bigotry and while not all of his followers share those views - some are just clueless and misguided - it’s clear from his support from hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan that hatemongers do heart Trump. One group Trump and his ideologue sycophants embrace is being anti-Muslim, at least when it comes to Muslims entering America, and so they will undoubtedly seize on two robberies of the same Riverdale, Illinois bank by the same suspect -  described as a Middle Eastern woman wearing a headscarf - as proof that all Muslims are evil. The woman was wearing a pink headscarf when she robbed a bank in south suburban Riverdale and police believe she also robbed the same branch less than three months ago. This repetitive thief robbed the Chase Bank branch at 255 W. 144th St. in Riverdale about 10 minutes before closing time and managed to do so despite standing just about 5-foot-5, weighing about 130 pounds and not showing a weapon during the robbery. She  is also suspected of robbing the Chase branch on 144th Street in June while wearing a purple headscarf, so maybe next time she’ll go with yellow or sky blue. Either way, it’s nice to have someone out there providing sure-to-be-overblown cannon fodder for those who want to stereotype a certain race or nationality as being evil, criminal or just all-around bad. Take aim and fire, waste bin of undesirables……….

- None of you are Barbie Girls and this, Aqua, is not a Barbie world. The four-piece Danish pop outfit of Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen, better known as Aqua, are apparently planning a reunion tour to mark the 20th anniversary of their chart-topping debut single 'Barbie Girl.’ Having contributed nothing of musical worth to the world - which includes their 2008 comeback tour, inexplicable 2009 greatest hits alum and third album in 2011 (yes, they released a greatest hits record with just two albums under their belt) - they will tour their native Denmark in 2017 to celebrate their lone hit’s 20th anniversary. Back in 1997, a musically stupid world gave audience to the insipid, mindless lyrics and digitally fueled sonic backdrop of “Barbie Girl,” a song which artfully blended crappy lyrics, an inane premise, awful spoken word intrusions and just the real blend of all-around terribleness, churning it up into an unlistenable mess. Thankfully, the song never reached the top of the U.S. charts, peaking at No. 7, and the band’s next two singles were all but ignored stateside despite appearing on the soundtrack to hit British romantic comedy “Sliding Doors.” The album on which “Barbie Girl” appeared, “Aquarium,” somehow managed to sell 14 million copies worldwide. That same world has since mercifully managed to forget that Aqua ever existed at all, so there really is no need to revive that ugly era in music history……..

- There are few professions where society can less afford to have a moron employed than the judicial realm. Simply put, you’re entrusting the freedom and rights of everyone in your country to those who sit on the bench and decide the outcome of legal cases, so having folks who are competent, intelligent and fair is vital to a nation. That makes Canadian Federal Court Judge Robin Camp a real problem for the Great White North. Camp is facing removal from the bench for his conduct when he asked a woman in a rape case why she couldn't "just keep [her] knees together” as a means of preventing sexual assault. That has landed Camp in a week-long judicial council hearing to determine whether he should be removed from the bench. His troubles started - aside from birth, when he seems to have been born without a soul or an IQ above 17 - in 2014, when he was a provincial court judge and thought it was wise to ask a 19-year-old woman who  said she was raped over a bathroom sink during a house party why she didn't "skew her pelvis" or push her bottom into the sink to avoid penetration. Yes, blaming a woman who was being violently accosted and had what may have been a larger, stronger man forcing himself on her for not doing more to prevent her rape…..classy. But that set up the punch line: "Why couldn't you just keep your knees together?" Had the exchange ended there, Camp would be a prime candidate for losing his job, but he wasn’t done - not even close. He went on to ruminate on the subject of young women and sex, saying, "Young wom[e]n want to have sex, particularly if they're drunk." Yes, generalizing all women as overly horny or outright whores, also a classy move. To cap things off Camp declared, "Some sex and pain sometimes go together...that's not necessarily a bad thing." If the pain is involved with consensual sex between two people who also happen to have a safe word, then pain and sex can go together. But not if one of those involved is being forced to participate against their will. Oh, and in case you couldn’t tell based on all of these pearls of judicial wisdom, Camp ultimately acquitted the man charged with the crime. He did deliver a stern rebuke to the defendant in which he directed the man to tell his friends that they “have to be far more gentle with women… they have to be very careful.” Thankfully, a competent judge overturned the verdict on appeal and a new trial is scheduled for November……….
