Castro + yoga, marauding nuns and pets help prevent asthma in kids

- Is “Dumb and Dumber” suddenly beneath Jim Carrey? Right now, the reasons aren’t clear, but what is crystal clear is the fact that Carrey and New Line Cinema have reach an impasse over his involvement in  “Dumb and Dumber To” and Carrey will not be a part of the project. Right now, all fans of the popular lowest-common-denominator comedic franchise need to know is that Carrey won’t be reprising the Lloyd Christmas role alongside Jeff Bridges. “Dumb and Dumber” was a definite piece of lowbrow comedic genius when it came out in 1994, but a poorly executed 2003 follow-up, “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd” sans Carrey and Bridges failed miserably and combined with the passing of time, managed to seriously dull enthusiasm for the franchise. The prospect of reviving it with the original stars in place kick-started that excitement in spit of the face that series creators Peter and Bobby Farrelly, a.k.a. the Farrelly Brothers, have failed to offer anything above C-list material as they have ridden their early wave of “Dumb” fame in the past decade-plus. That Carrey will not be a part of the new movie is bad news for fans and also for Carrey himself, who has flopped in a variety of genres over the past several years, including dramatic fare  (“The Number 23”), (“Mr. Popper’s Penguins”), classics (“A Christmas Carol”), high-concept ("Yes Man”) and even quirky (“I Love You Phillip Morris” as a gay con man). Without fail, Carrey’s movies have failed and the best project he’s been associated with of late is a creepy video love letter he made for Emma Stone. He tried to win some favor back on “Saturday Night Live” last year and will look to gravy train some of Steve Carrell’s good karma in the upcoming rival-magicians comedy “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.” A great turn in “Dumb and Dumber To” could have done more for his ailing career than most anything else he could have done……..

- Cuba has been known for many (negative) qualities and stigmas over the past few decades thanks to the rule of former dictator Fidel Castro, but could the difficult living conditions have actually been worse? It’s a question worth raising after a front-page editorial Tuesday in the island's state-run Granma spelled out Castro’s apparent affinity for yoga. The 35-word ode to the Eastern art of meditation and stretching was the latest "Reflection from Comrade Fidel," in which Castro channels his inner Jack Handy and provides deep thoughts for the masses. Rather than touch on global issues like the conflict in Syria or the impending economic collapse of Europe, the bearded madman elected to touch on the art of bending and contorting one’s body into odd poses for purposes of therapy and relaxation. "Yoga does things with the human body that defy the imagination," he wrote. Anyone who has seen Scarlett Johannson’s turn as an über-hot yoga instructor in  “He’s Just Not That Into You” can attest to that imagination-defying power of yoga….but that’s an entirely different story, as is the gift to the world that yoga has given in the form of hot women wearing yoga pants in public places. Sadly, Castro’s piece did not indicate whether the retired despot was himself a practitioner. It was also a curiously short writing for a man whose "opinion pieces often have filled whole pages in the newspaper.” Instead, the man who often spoke for hours without notes on a variety of subjects during his political prime was extremely concise and read more like a tweet than an opinion piece. Other “Reflection” pieces have touched on a past rift with former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, praised former East German leader Erich Honecker and tackled other political topics. The yoga post, should Castro himself practice yoga, does make one wonder how much harsher life on the island nation could have been during his tyrannical reign if not for a few brief moments of relaxation every day………..

- The pre-draft scouting combine is the single most important job interview for an athlete in any sport whose professional league uses such an event to evaluate incoming talent from the amateur ranks. For this reason, NFL prospects who show up at the league’s February scouting combine in Indianapolis having smoked pot in the past week and who are therefore destined to fail the mandatory combine drug test are colossal idiots. Preparing for the combine and coming in to it clean are vital and so is getting a clean bill of health by the league’s doctors once at the combine. Ohio State forward Jared Sullinger is learning that lesson the difficult way after he was “red flagged” by doctors at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago due to back issues. Although his father tried to head off concerns about the issue by saying tightness and minor ailments in Sullinger’s legs led to the alarms, the reports of his higher susceptibility to injuries has already begun to affect the way teams picking high in the first round of this month’s draft are ranking him on their draft boards. The most prominent instance of a team revising its opinion on the 6-foot-8 forward is the Golden State Warriors, who own the seventh pick in the draft, reportedly taking Sullinger off their board. With David Lee, who plays the same position as Sullinger, already under contract, the burly former Buckeye would have been an unlikely choice for Golden State anyhow. However, draftniks breaking down the first round have projected Sullinger to drop as low as Denver at No. 20. That may well mean a good team, picking at the end of the round and with an open mind and higher willingness to take a risk because they are already well-stocked, may get a great value for a player who could well beat the negative prognosis and have an outstanding, mostly healthy career……….

- Many individuals have strong allergies to dogs and cats, but could dogs actually help strengthen your immune system and prevent childhood asthma? The answer is yes, at least according to a new study led by Dr. Kei Fujimura, a molecular biologist at the University of California, San Francisco. Fujimura presented the results of his research at the 112th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology (known for being a three-day kegger disguised as an academic conference) and explained that bacteria found in the dust of homes with dogs may have protective effects against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Previous studies have shown that infants with severe cases of RSV have an increased chance of developing asthma, so anything that works against the virus could help prevent asthma. "These findings are the first step towards creating a therapy to protect infants against RSV and therefore lessening the occurrence of asthma in the long term," Fujimura said. Building off previous studies showing that bacterial communities in house dust are different in homes with and without dogs, and that children living with pet dogs have a lower incidence of asthma, Fujimura sought to draw a link between the two phenomena. To test his hypothesis, he and his team collected dust from homes with dogs, mixed it in a solution and fed it to mice. Eight days later, the mice were given RSV. Their immune response was compared to another group infected with RSV and to a control group comprised of healthy mice. Mice that were fed house dust did not develop the inflammation and mucous production symptomatic of RSV, but a different group of bacteria were found in the gastrointestinal tract of these mice compared to the other experimental groups. "In this experiment we were able to manipulate the gut micro biota and this influenced the immune response in the lungs," Fujimura explained. According to the good doctor, this distinct set of micro biota helped protect the mice from developing RSV. Unfortunately, the researchers were not able to determine exactly which bacteria are the key drivers for this response. However, the findings do support the hypothesis that exposure to animals in early childhood stimulates the immune system to resist the development of asthma and other allergies………..

- America has its eyes on you, group of Catholic nuns traveling around the country to fight for social justice. This group of mischief makers disguised as women of the cloth are taking their "Faith, Family and Fairness Tour" around the country and seeking to rile up the good people of America in places like Janesville, Wisc., where they stopped Tuesday. The nuns (presumably with their wooden rulers to whack knuckles for deviant behavior) were greeted by a large crowd. "What we're here to do is lift up a different point of view and say, 'Lets talk,'" said Sister Simone Campbell, the leader of this band of malevolent marauders. Calling themselves the "Nuns on the Bus, they have been traveling around the country to protest Republican federal budget proposals that they say hurt the poor. "(The Republican budget plan) actually shifts tax cuts to the wealthy and $8 billion more to the military than what they're asking for. So, from our prospective, that's not a good choice for our nation," Campbell said. While in Wisconsin, the nuns stopped outside of Republican U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan's office on Main Street just one day after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made a stop in the same city. Some in the crowd were there to oppose the nuns and show support for Republican lawmakers like Ryan, who they believe is doing the best he can in a difficult situation. "I'm embarrassed my fellow religious sisters are doing this. I totally support Paul Ryan. He may not be 100 percent, but I think he's the best we have in the foreground than we have now. He's making cuts in our budget which have to be," said Beloit Resident Sister Rose Azalea Bauer, with the Franciscan Order Of Perpetual Adoration of LaCrosse. Bauer deserves respect because a person is clearly unselfish and hell-bent on doing good deeds if they’re willing to reside in the frozen tundra that is Wisconsin in order to make a difference. The message for the day was one of responsibility, unity and compassion. "We're a nation that values individual responsibility but treasures community, and we can only do it together, and that's the same as our faith. It's individual responsibility combined with solidarity that makes a whole; that's who we are," Campbell said. A likely story, sister………..

Political plagiarism, Palin reality dominance and 90-inch LED TV's

- Russia has plenty to be ashamed about, but soccer shouldn’t be high on the list. Communism, rigged elections and a despotic, rights-trampling leader are reasons to feel bad about your country, but an early exit from Euro 2012 is not. Just don’t try telling that to Russian fans, politicians and media after their team was bounced in the group stage of the tournament Friday after a 1-0 defeat to Greece in Warsaw. When the draw for Euro 2012 was made last December, Russia landed a seemingly enviable spot in a winnable group alongside Poland, Greece and the Czech Republic. Even notoriously drab coach Dick Advocaat cracked a smile at the time and after Russia bolted from the gate in its first game and crushed he Czechs, winning 4-1 when it could have scored 10, the optimism appeared justified. Scarring memories of Euro championships past were wiped away and with a win in either of their final two matches of the group round, the Russians would be on to the knockout stage. That win never came as a 1-1 tie with bitter rival Poland after riots between the two teams’ fans in the streets the day of the game and the loss to the Greeks left Russia and Poland on the outside looking in as Greece and the Czechs moved on. The resulting disappointment by national media members paired nicely with the anger expressed by many fans at the lackluster performance and apparent absence of suitable outrage on the part of the players. A team of which much was expected simply didn’t seem too broken up by their elimination. The Russian squad walking straight off the field and down the tunnel after their loss to the Greeks rather than run over to their fans to thank them for their support. At the e postmatch press conference, Advocaat stated that he was "satisfied with his work” and that Russia "had played well." Worst of all was captain Andrei Arshavin getting hooked by a fan in the lobby of the team hotel in Warsaw and getting dragged into an argument that ended with him derisively telling the fan, "The fact that we didn't live up to your expectations isn't our problem. It's yours." The team is facing scathing criticism for lodging at the Bristol, Warsaw's most expensive hotel, and delivering a bargain-basement effort. A deputy in Russia's Duma (parliament) has proposed banning Arshavin from receiving commercial endorsement earnings as punishment for the Euro 2012 fiasco. Time to hit the premium vodka for solace………

- Rich people who always NEED to have the newest, most expensive toy or gadget to hold over the heads of your fellow 1-percent friends, act now. Sharp is thinking big and to stay ahead of the curve, you need to think along with them. While it may seem like flat-screen televisions have grown ridiculously large and that making them any bigger was a waste because you may as well install a movie screen in your home, Sharp disagrees. Instead, the tech giant unveiled the 90-inch Aquos LED TV on Tuesday, rolling out an entertainment monster that stands 4 feet tall and is 6 feet, 8 inches across. To put it in perspective, the screen is as wide as LeBron James is tall. Yet the entire package is less than 5 inches thick and weighs 114 pounds. What can one expect to pay for what is believed to be the biggest LED high-def television on the market? A mere $10,999.99. Yes, $10,999 would have been too cheap, so those extra 99 cents were a must. Before dismissing the 90-inch model as a novelty few will buy, take a look at the success of the 60-, 70- and 80-inch sets from the past despite some having relatively small viewing angles. Sharp Electronics of America President John Herrington touted the TV as offering “size, picture quality and smart functionality unlike anything consumers have experienced.” In an accompanying news release, Sharp hyped the screen by painting a picture of standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon and seeing the breathtaking scene below. "That's the experience you'll get when watching the breathtaking 90-inch (diagonal) AQUOS LED TV (model LC-90LE745U), introduced today by Sharp," the release said. Right, but a family of four could afford three or four trips to the actual Grand Canyon for the price of that TV……….

- In a story straight out of a cable legal drama’s plot (literally), the battle between artsy East Williamsburg tenants and their determined landlord has taken a theatrical twist. Borrowing a plot quite literally played out in the most recent season of the USA Network drama “Fairly Legal,” the landlord of the apartments at 13 and 15 Thames, a loft-style building, has allegedly hired a local , to chase out his unwanted tenants. The Brooklyn neighborhood where the building is located is also home to the motorcycle gang and after the city ordered the first floor tenants to vacate in January, the landlord allegedly turned to the gang for help in forcing those tenants out. "Our landlord has hired bikers. A bike gang is trying to intimidate people inside our building," said tenant Jason Blackman. He and his fellow first-floor dwellers, many of whom are artists and free spirits, believe their landlord wants to raise rent to attract wealthier, upper-class tenants. "They're trying to bully us out, but we're not budging," Blackman proclaimed. When initial attempts to remove the current tenants failed, the members of the Forbidden Ones began showing up. Because the gang has long met on the same block as the apartment building, their presence is nothing new. However, their purpose for being there has shifted and depending upon whom you ask, it is either for sinister reasons or security purposes. "We're here to make sure people don't sneak in and squat," said Tito Martinez, a Forbidden One member. "The landlord is not paying us to force them out.” Under Martinez’s logic, the landlord hired him to be the building's super. In exchange, his gang is allowed to park their bikes in the building's garage. The first-floor tenants believe the arrangement is much shadier and police records show that more than nearly three dozen 911 calls have been made from the building since January, most to report harassment. Amazingly, the landlord has been unavailable for comment on the issue and doesn’t seem likely to surface any time soon………

- What would you get if you took the Kardashians, replaced their Hollywood excess and vapidity with Alaskan heartiness, removed the constant barrage of sex that’s the epicenter of the Kardashian brand and swapped it out with conservative values and mixed in a heaping helping of cluelessness? That’s right, you would end up with the Palin family. As the Kardashian empire spreads its insipid presence across the reality television world, the Palins are fighting back to see who can have the biggest reality TV presence while simultaneously making the world a worse place. Leading the way was the mama grizzly herself, Sarah Palin, who had a short-lived, poorly rated reality series on TLC. “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” was an unmitigated disaster, but that didn’t deter Lifetime from offering up a reality show to Palin’s teen mom daughter Bristol, whose new series  “Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp,” premiered this week. Following around an IQ-deficient young woman with a child of her own is fascinating and all, but that clearly is not enough to make the Palins the first family of reality TV. Cue the patriarch of the family, Sarah’s poor husband Todd, who will be one of the “celebrity” contestants on the upcoming “Stars Earn Stripes” competition series. That announcement came the same day as “Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp,” premiered. “Stars Earn Stripes” actually has an idea that isn't totally terrible, pairing military or law enforcement personnel with E-list celebrities and putting them through missions inspired by real-life military exercises. One team will be eliminated each week and retired US Army Gen. Wesley Clark — one-time Supreme Allied Commander Europe for NATO — and “Dancing With the Stars’” Samantha Harris will host. A cast of bad celebrity reality show retreads will comprise the “stars” portion of the cast as boxing champ Laila Ali, actor Dean Cain, former NFL star Terry Crews, singer Nick Lachey and Olympic skier Picabo Street are all part of the show………….

- What is it with prominent Eastern European politicians and plagiarism of late? In March, Hungarian President Pal Schmitt was caught up in a plagiarism scandal from his university days and now, new Romanian premier Victor Ponta is in a similar spot. Ponta dismissed the charges as part of a plot orchestrated by the country’s president, but reports that more than half Ponta’s 432-page thesis on the International Criminal Court had been copied from other sources will not go away. The premier has insisted he will not resign and sounded downright defiant when questioned about the issue. “Have I done something against Romania’s interests as prime minister? Why should I resign? No way,” he scoffed. The scandal comes just one month after Ponta’s left-wing Social Liberal Union only came to power, following a “no confidence” vote against the previous center-right government. Ponta made it clear he views the accusations as manufactured drama directly from President Traian Basescu, who has close links to the opposition center-right Democrat-Liberal Party. “You know very well this is a pretext of a political war between President Basescu and I, a war each of us leads with their own weapons,” Ponta said. Great, except that doesn’t explain how more than 200 pages of your thesis were lifted from someone else’s work. In Ponta’s deluded world, his thesis’ bibliography lists the papers he had consulted and the project’s foreword was written by Ion Diaconu, one of the writers whose work he was accused of plagiarizing. Should the country’s education ministry want to review the thesis, Ponta said he would be happy to submit his work.  “If the commission tells me I wasn’t supposed to list the bibliography at the end but insert it as footnotes, of course I will give up my doctor’s title immediately. I am not mad about titles, I don’t care about this one,” he said. That an elected official in Romania has a possibly bogus doctorate isn't that surprising, as following the collapse of Communism in 1989, a large number of private universities and institutes sprang up, offering questionable qualifications. Whether Ponta goes the way of Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, a German defense minister tipped as a successor to Chancellor Angela Merkel who resigned his post following his own plagiarism scandal, remains to be seen……….

Vacation in Somalia, debunking scientific wisdom and Shia LeBouf's crank in Iceland

- Physics freaks, prepare to have your world rocked. The reigning theory of particle physics may be flawed, literally altering the universe as we know it. Up to now, the Standard Model has been the best handbook scientists have to describe the tiny bits of matter that make up the universe, but that theory has long been a point of criticism for scientists who argue that it has numerous holes in it. New evidence from a study called the BaBar experiment at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, Calif., has pointed out where those holes may life. Inside the accelerator, researchers observe collisions between electrons and their antimatter partners, positrons (scientists think all matter particles have antimatter counterparts with equal mass but opposite charge). What the BaBar researchers found was new evidence that a subatomic particle decays in a certain way more often than it should. When these collisions occur, the particles explode into energy that converts into new particles. These often include so-called B-bar mesons, which are made of both matter and antimatter, including a bottom quark and an antiquark. As confusing as all of that is, the process also has the bulky label "B to D-star-tau-nu." In their work, the BaBar researchers were looking for a particular decay process where B-bar mesons decay into three other particles: a D meson (a quark and an antiquark, one of which is "charm" flavored), an antineutrino (the antimatter partner of the neutrino) and a tau lepton (a cousin of an electron). In their experiments, this result occurred more often than the Standard Model predicts it will. "The excess over the Standard Model prediction is exciting," BaBar spokesperson Michael Roney of the University of Victoria in Canada said in a statement. "But before we can claim an actual discovery, other experiments have to replicate it and rule out the possibility this isn't just an unlikely statistical fluctuation." Confirming a clear break from the Standard Model will take more research, but debunking knowledge people based their world view on is always worth the effort…………

- Iceland has given plenty to the world (which goes without saying, of course) and now, the Icelandic people have done something that neither Michael Bay nor Steven Spielberg have been able to accomplish, namely making Shia LeBouf’s on-screen presence anything other than uninteresting and unremarkable. LeBouf, who failed to add anything to the “Transformers” franchise that any C-level actor could not have contributed to the mix and starred in the movie that officially but a burning slug into the back of the head of the “Indiana Jones” franchise, is receiving plenty of attention after his appearance in a new music v Sigur Ros ideo for Icelandic rockers. More specifically, one member of LeBouf’s anatomy is receiving a wealth of attention and it’s definitely not his nose. LeBouf goes fully nude in the artsy video and the video features a few side profile shots of his crank. In Iceland, nudity of that sort isn’t anything remarkable, but the video is the subject of a lot of talk in other parts of the globe. Georg Holm, the bassist for the band, admitted that initially, he found the video a bit perplexing but he has now come to embrace it. "At first I didn't know what to make of the video, because it is so full of ideas and confusion," Holm said. "Now I love it.  It seems to have no beginning and no end, and just makes you think about what might and might not be going on." The video quickly went viral right after it was released on the Internet Monday morning and LeBouf is credited with collaborating on the video concept. According to the band, the concept is an artistic interpretation about the struggles of various addictions. Its success, however extensive that may be, could open up a world of success for LeBouf in all manner of projects wherein he doesn’t actually have to execute any dialogue………..

- Never let it be said that the fashion world or the residents of sunny Southern California are out of touch with the world around them. Just because kooky Beverly Hills designer Jeremy Scott designed a custom shoe for adidas that critics say evokes slavery because it features a plastic set of shackles is no reason to paint Scott and his fellow fashion-eers as clueless about how the average person with a social conscience thinks. Reaction to the shoe has ranged from shock to anger and on Twitter, many users took to labeling the shoes "Adidas slave shackle kicks." The idea for a boycott was bandied about, but the company pre-empted those threats Monday night by announcing it is pulling the shoe design even though it believes the kicks are the handiwork of a whimsical designer. "The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott's outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery. Since the shoe debuted on our Facebook page ahead of its market release in August, Adidas has received both favorable and critical feedback. We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace," an official company statement explained. Some media outlets have decried the reaction as manufactured hysteria and scoffed at any racist implications, but adidas clearly did not portray the shoes as anything other than the cutting edge in overpriced athletic shoe fashion. A picture of the shoes, with their yellow “shackle” rising upward, appeared early Monday on the company’s Facebook page with the message: "Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?" Angry African-Americans posted responses invoking slavery and the injustices perpetrated on their ancestors and threatened to boycott all adidas products if the shoes went on sale. However, the controversy has been averted and these suddenly socially conscious shoe consumers can turn their rage elsewhere………..

- The wealthiest athletes in the world are not necessarily the healthiest or the freest at the moment.  In fact, being on Forbes magazine’s list of the 100 highest paid athletes seems to be synonymous with failure, injury and in at least one case, incarceration, at the moment. The No. 1 entry on the list is also a current inmate at the Clark County detention center in Las Vegas, living in seclusion from the prison’s general population because of his celebrity status and spending 23 hours a day in his cell. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is currently serving a three-month jail sentence for domestic battery but was sports’ top earner last year, making $85 million for two fights and his other sources of income. The man against whom Mayweather could have had the biggest fight in boxing in years until that man suffered a highly suspicious loss to Timothy Bradley earlier this month was second on the list, as Manny Pacquiao made $62 million from earnings and endorsements. Pacquiao lost his WBO welterweight title to Bradley in an indefensible split decision two weekends ago that left most observers crying that the fix was in. The wave of anti-success continued for the third man on the list: golfer Tiger Woods. Woods, who had been No. 1 on the list since 2001, made $59.4 million to place third and after coming unglued at the U.S. Open over the weekend and finishing 15 shots off the pace at the Masters in April, he’s hardly on an upward trajectory. The first man on the list to be both free from incarceration and not suffering one disappointing defeat after another is LeBron James of the Miami Heat, who ranked fourth with $53 million. Quickly fading former tennis great Roger Federer is fifth at $52.7 million and the top football player is the recovering Peyton Manning at No. 10 as he tries to come back from multiple neck surgeries. Only two women made the list, as French Open champion Maria Sharapova ($27.9 million) comes in at No. 26 and the 2011 French Open champion Li Na further behind with $18.4 million………

- Put Mogadishu back on the list of potential vacation destinations, world. The Somali capital has finally shed a label it never wanted in the first place: The World's Most Dangerous City. The seaside city is enjoying a peace that has lasted for the better part of a year to the point that Somalis who fled decades of war are coming back, along with United Nations relief workers long forced to operate out of Nairobi, the capital of neighboring Kenya. Many nations are reopening their embassies in the city and Somalis who fled for safer pastures are stunned as they return to a city much different than the one they left. The U.N. and embassies pulled out in the 1990s and the last fully functioning government collapsed in 1991, and the city fell under the control of Al-Qaida-linked militants from 2007 until last August, a four-year span when full-fledged war raged with African Union troops. Last month, the African force took control of Afmadow, an al-Shabab stronghold on Mogadishu's outskirts, and have brought security to the city. "This is the longest period of sustained peace Mogadishu has seen in 20 years," said Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, spokesman for the African Union force known as AMISOM. Britain announced in February that it was naming an ambassador to Somalia and Johnnie Carson, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for African affairs, visited Mogadishu on Sunday. The Somali government is focused on transforming troops in Mogadishu into a professional force that provides security instead of being a threat. Soldiers are receiving training in Uganda, but many go months without pay and some remain a danger to Somalia's civilians. Signs of progress can be seen in Mogadishu's port, where ginormous quantities of construction materials are being shipped in. Land prices are on the rise and the world is taking notice of all the positive developments. "I keep saying Mogadishu is open for business. Reconstruction is at an incredible level," said Killian Kleinschmidt, the U.N.'s deputy humanitarian coordinator for Mogadishu. Reminders of war, like damaged buildings and bullet-riddled walls, can still be seen, but Somali government spokesman Abdirahman Omar Osman believes Mogadishu is now safer than Baghdad or Kabul. The city may even appoint a tourism minister soon to attract tourists to the city………

An Xbox tablet, basketball on aircraft carriers and the return of Beetlejuice

- Watching top-ranked North Carolina defeat Michigan State in front of President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and thousands of military personnel in the Carrier Classic on Veterans Day on Nov. 11 was amazing. The Tar Heels and Spartans squared off on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson before the troops, the President and a national television audience and the success of the event has sparked a slew of imitators. Where there was one outdoor, ship-bound game last season, there will be three of them this coming season. Marquette will play Ohio State on a ship off the coast of Charleston, S.C., Syracuse will take on San Diego State on the flight deck of a retired ship, the USS Midway, off the coast of San Diego and it was announced over the weekend that Florida will play Georgetown on a ship Nov. 9 off the coast of Jacksonville, Fla. The U.S. Navy expressed its full support of the Florida-Georgetown contest, just as it was with the Carrier Classic last year. "The Navy is excited to work with the city of Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport to bring the Navy-Marine Corps Classic to the First Coast," Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said in a statement. "The Navy is America's Away Team; when we are on the job, we operate forward around the globe and often out of sight of the American people. This is a unique opportunity to showcase the Navy, and to join together to honor our veterans and active duty military." No television arrangements have been made for any of the games yes, but all involved parties are sufficiently fired up for them. "This is a unique way to say thank you to our military while putting Jacksonville on display for countless sports fans tuning in from all over the globe," Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown said in a statement. Whether the uniqueness of the concept can be sustained long term is a big question, but schools are clearly looking to seize upon the concept while it’s still remotely fresh………..

- Barnes & Noble doesn’t want in on Microsoft’s tablet plans, so what’s next for the maker of the world’s worst operating system? According to sources, the next step just might be Xbox integration. The current rumor is that the company’s Surface multi-touch tablet will share many internal similarities and components with the popular gaming system. While not confirmed by Microsoft, the so-called Xbox Surface tablet will, according to purportedly leaked specifications, have a 7-inch 1280x720 multi-touch display and connect wirelessly to a “stationary computing device” base station with twin 3.1GHz IBM processors, a custom 28nm AMD GPU and 250GB of speedy storage. Much like the tablet the Xbox Surface will try (and fail miserably) to compete with, the iPad, the Microsoft tablet will also have WiFi and Bluetooth, along with a separately mentioned 2.4GHz connection likely to be used as a sort of proprietary link between slate and base-station. To add in more versatility for image sharing, there will also be an SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot. Another key question with any tablet or laptop is battery life and the Xbox Surface will reportedly feature a rechargeable battery with up to seven hours of life. All of it would run on a system with a meager 288 MB of RAM and a custom IBM engine for scale-out workloads. It doesn’t sound tremendously impressive, but this is Microsoft, so give the company a chance to prove itself and eventually, you’ll be even less impressed than you are right now…………

- There still might be another round of “Beetlejuice” for Tim Burton. The director of the dark, shadowy 1988 comedy starring Michael Keaton as a ghost who scares away humans for other ghosts insisted he’s still interested in working on a sequel, but is waiting to see a script before he commits.
He was asked about the project after word broke last month that screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith was penning a sequel to the original. Grahame-Smith also wrote the screenplay for Burton's most recent movie, the disappointing “Dark Shadows,” and if they work together on a follow-up to “Beetlejuice,” Burton said the film would not be a "remake" or a "reboot", but "a true sequel with Michael Keaton as the title character.” That would be a decided departure from the approach taken in the “Bourne” franchise, in which a studio desperate to squeeze more cash out of the series was willing to make a sequel in which they had to reboot the entire concept because the star of the first three films did not return. While he is currently working on a remake of his 1984 short film “Frankenweenie,” which is scheduled for release in October and stars “Beetlejuice” cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara, Burton could easily slot the potential “Beetlejuice” sequel in next year. "Seth is writing something, so we'll see," he said. "I love the character but I want to just kind of look at it from a fresh perspective and see what he comes up with. That's, like, one of my favorite characters I've ever dealt with… I would love to revisit that character at some point." Sounds like a match made in ghoulish heaven……….

- When the topic turns to ugly sweaters or maple syrup, the discussion has to include Vermont. The Nutmeg State has the perfect climate for both of these entities to thrive and for Killington, Vt. resident Ann Marie Blackman, making and selling maple syrup isn’t her thing. Instead, she has turned the ugly holiday sweaters most of us only rock once a year at the annual Ugly Holiday Sweater party we’re invited to every December into a business. My Ugly Christmas Sweater collects, repurposes and then sells extraordinarily ugly holiday sweaters, cardigans and dresses. Blackman doesn’t operate the business as a tongue-in-cheek idea wherein she merely cashes in on the terrible fashion tastes of others; she seems to genuinely enjoy the ugly holiday sweater phenomenon. "There's actually a sweater I didn't sell because I love how ugly it is. It's a 1980s padded shoulder with children's toys, a giant Raggedy Ann, a toy box. To me it's like a scary clown. I was going to wear it to a party but I want to add lights to it," she said. The business started as a small home-based operation based in a warehouse filled with fringe, lights, jingle bells all things ugly, tacky and gaudy. With a website, myuglychristmassweater.com, the former stay-at-home mom is now a small-scale entrepreneur making a living. "A few years ago, my kids were finishing up high school, getting ready to go to college. So I was looking for something to sell during the holiday season," Blackman explained. Ironically, she insisted she had never heard of the Ugly Holiday Sweater party. "I had never heard of those parties," she said. "But I thought I could make sweaters uglier than those on the market." That’s right, this woman MAKES ugly holiday sweaters too. After selling a few of her creations on eBay, the operation grew quickly from there. Tales of customers winning prizes at their ugly sweater parties flow in to the My Ugly Christmas Sweater offices all holiday season long and prove that ugly is beautiful to some………

- Heads on pikes are so 16th century…..except in India. In the village of Dungarji, not only are people still parading severed heads around town, but the man doing the decapitating and parading is the father of the young woman who was beheaded. According to police in the region, marble miner Ogad Singh was irate about his daughter's lifestyle and rather than disown her, verbally abuse her or even smack her around, he chopped her head off with a sword and then paraded it through his village before surrendering to authorities in the western Indian village. His daughter had been living with her parents in the Rajasthani village after leaving her husband two years ago and she was apparently doing a lot of getting over her failed marriage, so to speak. Police said Singh was upset by his daughter having affairs with men the breaking point came two weeks ago when she eloped with one of her lovers. At that point, Singh could have let her go, disowned her and refused to ever speak to her again, but he took a different route. After forcing her to return home Sunday, he beheaded her Monday with a sword and then marched around town sporting the detached dome for all to see. Sadly, the story isn’t completely without precedent in a rapidly modernizing nation rife with social clashes as youths resist traditions like arranged marriage or limits on women venturing outside their parents' or husbands' homes. Feel free to join the rest of the world in the 21st century any time, India………

Warlords use their people as collateral, movie news and auto racing tough on the ladies

- Circus animals with afros were enough to defeat outer-space menaces and ‘80s rockers at the box office this weekend. “Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted” remained at No. 1 in its second weekend of release, earning $35.5 million to raise its cumulative domestic total to $120.5 million. “Prometheus” remained in second place as the top two films were unchanged, adding $20.2 million to its coffers for a two-week total of $88.9 million. The over-the-top ‘80s excess of “Rock of Ages” snagged third place in its debut with a modest result of $15.1 million, edging out fourth-place finisher “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which made $13.8 million and dropped one spot from last weekend. It was another so-so debut for another extremely similar, extremely uninspiring Adam Sandler movie as “That's My Boy” ranked fifth with $13 million, good enough for fifth place in its opening weekend. “MIB 3” was right behind in sixth place, scoring $10 million to boost its four-week haul to $152.7 million. The two longest-tenured members of the top 10 were next on the list, as “The Avengers” added $8.9 million to its total and has garnered $586.7 million in seven impressive weeks in U.S. theaters, not to mention the hundreds of millions more it has made around the world. “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” also in its seventh week of release, albeit still-limited release, made $2.2 million for the weekend and has raked in $35.1 million overall. Critical favorite “Moonrise Kingdom” was in ninth place with $2.1 million and in four weeks of limited release, its total stands at $6.8 million. “What to Expect When You're Expecting” snagged the last spot in the top 10 with $1.3 million and has managed just $38.7 million in five weeks. The quick sinking of “Battleship” continued as it fell out of the top 10 (No. 11) and “The Dictator” (No. 12) also dropped out……….

- Yale and smoking: a natural fit. When one thinks of the Ivy League, they can’t help but think of a health-wrecking, addictive habit that is as illogical as it is stupid. The wicked smaht Ivy Leaguers at Yale recently dove in to the world of smoking cessation tactics and discovered that hotlines to help people quit smoking could also flag problem drinking. Yale researchers analyzed surveys to probe alcohol use among 88,479 callers to the New York State Smoker’s Quitline and discovered that nearly one-quarter of callers reported hazardous drinking as well. “Once people start drinking, there is a trigger to start smoking,” said study author Benjamin Toll, assistant professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine and director of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven’s Smoking Cessation Service. “They lose their inhibition to tobacco.” Hmm…drunk, impaired people can’t make wise choices about jamming a carcinogen-filled cancer stick in their pie hole? Weird. While previous studies demonstrated that alcohol abuse decreases the likelihood that smokers will quit using cigarettes, this effort pushed that analysis a step further. A typical call to the Quitline involves a 10- to 15-minute conversation in which smokers are asked about their past attempts to stop smoking, and counselors discuss methods that smokers can use to quit smoking. While muddying the waters of a person’s attempt to quit their lethal smoking habit by dragging possible alcohol abuse into the mix would be dangerous, there is hope that better understanding the link between the two could help medical professionals better treat both addictions. The study appears in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research…………

- Profiling and stereotyping are the new order of the day at the HEW Federal Credit Union in District Heights, Md. While businesses around the country have taken to singling out customers who wear hoodies or other attire that conceals their face, the Silver Hill branch of the credit union in District Heights is kicking it up a notch by banning anyone wearing a hat, hoodie, sunglasses and even scarves, headbands and hairnets. The policy came as an abrupt surprise to four women who were refused Friday for daring to sport headbands and hairnets. "They denied me entrance to the bank as soon as I got to the door," says Kim Anderson, a Credit Union customer who was refused service. It took Anderson and her three friends a matter of hours to announce their intentions to file "The guard said, ‘I'm sorry you can't come in,’” Anderson says. “I said, ‘why not?’ He said, ‘you have to remove your scarf. That's our policy.’ I'm like no." She also claimed that the credit union forced another woman to remove her wig and technically, the policy is legal because businesses are allowed to restrict what customers wear for safety reasons, according to the Prince George's County Human Relations Commission. That doesn’t make it any less bullsh*t, of course, because unless women have taken to concealing guns or machetes in their scarves or wigs, then head adornment that don’t obscure a person’s face shouldn’t be an issue……….

- Don’t bring any of that 20th-century medical witchcraft around here, yo. That’s the philosophy of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a militant commander in northwest Pakistan. Bahadur warned polio vaccination teams on Saturday to stay away from the territory he controls near the Afghan border and refuses to allow immunizations until U.S. drone attacks in the country are stopped. While he is not alone in wanting the drone attacks to stop – the Pakistani government has also called for their cessation – there is nothing quite like holding an entire region of people in need of a simple, effective vaccination as hostages to advance your own agenda. Bahadur issued the warning in a pamphlet distributed Saturday in markets in the troubled North Waziristan tribal region. His resistance is another hurdle in efforts to beat polio on Pakistan, one of only three nations where the virus is endemic. "We don't want benefits from well-wishers who spend billions to save children from polio, which can affect one or two out of hundreds of thousands, while on the other hand the same well-wisher (America) with the help of its slave (Pakistan's government) kills hundreds of innocent tribesmen including old women and children by unleashing numerous drone attacks," the pamphlet said. To exacerbate fears and paranoia, the pamphlet also said spies could enter the region under the cover of vaccination teams to get information for the United States about "holy warriors." Right, because polio vaccination spy teams are the latest fad in intelligence gathering. Protecting children living in unsanitary conditions from a virus that attacks the nerves and can kill or paralyze is not enough, clearly there must be top-secret intelligence data gathered as well. Bahadur had an uneasy truce with the Pakistani army while he focuses on attacks against U.S. and NATO troops across the Afghan border and coincidentally, some of his fighters have recently been killed in the U.S. drone attacks. Because of Bahadur’s warning, the next round of the vaccination campaign that was scheduled to begin June 20 is now in doubt. It’s heartwarming to see that everyone has their priorities straight…………

- Auto racing is still not a sport, but the little driving competition NASCAR and IndyCar racers have going on is still somewhat sporting in its nature. Like any game, sport or competition dominated by men, auto racing needs a little T&A, a hot chick who has no real effect on the outcome but who can draw in a lot of male fans. NASCAR has its T&A in the form of Danica Patrick, who still hasn’t won a NASCAR or IndyCar race but is getting her chance to drive in NASCAR on the Nationwide Series and according to her crew chief, is being put in bad situations because competitors don't like losing to a woman. The fact that Patrick rarely beats anyone of any gender on the track is apparently lost on her crew chief Tony Eury Jr., who radioed to his driver, "They hate that you're running this good,” after Austin Dillon got Patrick loose during Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Michigan, forcing her to spin out for the second of three times. "I've heard comments made, 'Well, why is the 7 running so good? The girl is getting better and better,' " Eury said after an 18th-place finish for his driver. "It's to the point where she's running with the competitive guys. "We all have egos. We don't want the girl to outrun us.” Yes, Patrick finishing 18th has to be truly embarrassing for drivers who actually do win at least once in a blue moon. Patrick ends up going into the wall more often than she sniffs the top 10 and whether she fights back or not when male drivers (allegedly) attempt to strong-arm her, she doesn’t seem to have what it takes to end up in the winner’s circle. Patrick's goal is to run full time in the Cup series next year with Stewart Haas Racing and when she gets there, Eury believes experiences like Saturday will help her not win there the way she hasn’t won everywhere she’s been so far. "I want her to remember how certain people race her, remember how certain guys race you, so when she gets to his level, she can race them back like that,'' Eury said. Tell yourself what you need to hear, T………

Cuban capitalism, Balloon Man strikes again and God speaks to a football stoner

- Are there more Earths out there? If researcher Lars Buchhave of the University of Copenhagen is correct, the answer just might be yes. Previous studies showed that large, Jupiter-like exoplanets tend to be found around stars with high concentrations of so-called "metals" — elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. Buchhave’s study went against those findings, suggesting small, rocky planets can coalesce around a wide variety of stars. These smaller, terrestrial alien planets show no such loyalty to metal-rich stars, the study found. The findings suggest that Earth-like alien worlds may have formed early and often throughout our Milky Way galaxy's history. “Small planets could be widespread in our galaxy, because they do not require a high content of heavy elements to form,” Buchhave said. He and his colleagues analyzed data from NASA's planet-hunting Kepler space telescope, which has been continuously observing more than 150,000 stars since its launch in March 2009. Kepler monitors those stars for tiny brightness dips, often caused by alien planets that cross the stars' faces from the telescope's perspective. In its three-plus years of observation, Kepler has flagged more than 2,300 exoplanet candidates. Most have not yet been confirmed, but Kepler scientists estimate that at least 80 percent will end up being legitimate. Buchhave’s team examined 226 planet candidates circling 152 different stars. Three-fourths of these potential planets are smaller than Neptune, which has a diameter our times less than that of Earth. In studying the stars' spectra, Buchhave and his crew found that small, rocky worlds circle stars with a much broader range of metal content than do giant planets. "Naively, one might think that the more material you have in the (protoplanetary) disk, the more likely you are to form (small) planets," Buchhave said. "What we see, though, is that small planets form around stars with a wide range in heavy element content, while the close-in Jupiter -type planets seem to predominantly form around stars with a higher metal content." Their work proves that terrestrial planets can form around stars nearly four times more metal-poor than our own sun, meaning Earth-size worlds may be common throughout the Milky Way. So yes, there just might be a long list of places for life to exist………..

- Bend, Oregon’s “Balloon Man” is at it again. Kent Couch, along with his pal Iraqi daredevil Capt. Fareed Lafta, announced plans Thursday to attempt a new world record for the longest two-man cluster balloon flight next month in the skies over the Northwest. The two men plan to take off from Bend on the morning of July 14 and if all goes well, land the following day. “We are going to set another world record. You have to know, it is so peaceful, it doesn’t take much to get me back up there,” Couch said. Those who don’t value the chance to sleep in on a Saturday can show up to see the final flight preparations at 7 a.m. the day of the launch, which will take place at a very prestigious location: Couch's Stop and Go Mini Mart in Bend, around 10 a.m. The flight will continue overnight and land somewhere in southern Montana or even further east. “If the winds are strong and endurance is up, we could end up in Fargo, North Dakota, but that is unlikely.” Couch said. The unlikely partnership between Lafta and Couch originated as the latter began planning a special balloon flight over Baghdad. That journey is still in the planning stages, but in the meantime, drifting across the northwest United States is a good way to pass the time. Couch owns the world record for the longest cluster balloon flight at 235 miles, flying a little over nine hours, with about 250 balloons, in 2008. This time, he and Lafta will use over 350 helium balloons and drift across two or three states. Lafta is a pilot, ship captain, skydiver, diplomat and adventurer from Iraq who currently lives in Dubai and has made over 1,000 skydives. His flight buddy has gravy trained his glorified hobby into appearances on late-night talk shows and a feature story in Ripley’s Believe it or not! Together Lafta and Couch will waste enough helium to bring hours of joy to dozens of children’s birthday parties, all in the name of adventure………

- The Lord works in mysterious ways, but since when has God been in the business of speaking to stoners and instructing them to commit arson? According to former USC standout defensive back Kevin Ellison, since at least early Thursday morning. Ellison, who was one of the top defensive backs in the nation for the Trojans before being sidelined by a knee injury as a senior, has seen his football career go off the rails in the past few years. Now, his life off the field is in the same condition. Ellison jumped from the third-story unit of his apartment early Thursday morning in Liberty Lake, Wash., near Spokane, but sustained only smoke inhalation. He initially told authorities he had been smoking in bed and accidentally set the fire, but later admitted he set his bed ablaze with a joint because "God" told him to. Police questioned him a second time while he was still in the hospital and Ellison revealed that the Almighty instructed him to set the fire. He told another investigator "that he just wanted to get out of it and for it all to go away," according to federal court documents. He was then arrested on federal arson charges. Ellison has been playing linebacker for the Spokane Shock of the Arena Football League after an unsuccessful NFL career, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be balling in Spokane much longer. "If he truly did this, he's never coming back," said Shock owner Brady Nelson. According to Spokane Valley Fire Marshal Kevin Miller, federal arson charges were standard for arson cases involving large apartment complexes. Ellison's roommate and Shock teammate Chris Tucker escaped the fire after smoke detectors woke him up. The arson was the latest in a string of bizarre behavior for Ellision, who reportedly sent text messages to people Thursday night in which he claimed he was Jesus and was part of the Second Coming. During his time with the San Diego Chargers after he was selected as a sixth-round draft pick in 2009, he was arrested for suspected possession of a controlled substance after police found more than 100 Vicodin pills in his vehicle. He was eventually released and drifted into football no man’s land, where apparently the Lord had business for him to take care of……….

- Cuba, you’re about to find out what you’ve been missing. For decades, Communist rule has meant there was no such thing as a commercial radio or TV spot in the island nation. That meant no billboards, website banner ads or newspaper classifieds. In an odd way, a repressive and impoverished nation has been a nice refuge from the global marketing onslaught. However, the lack of traditional advertising opportunities is a problem for entrepreneurs now that President Raul Castro is pushing for limited free-market reform. A new business doesn’t work if one can’t let the world know the business exists. Small business owners have relied heavily on guerrilla marketing, including businesses like Bollywood, the Island's only Indian restaurant, which opened in December. Owners are forced to turn their own vehicles and property into de facto billboards and go with the always-annoying tactic of placing fliers and coupons on car windshields. Marketing gimmicks like promotional pens and knick-knacks have also become popular and bumper stickers are catching on as well. One burger chain in Havana staged a mini-marketing coup last month when more than 30 employees, customers and friends wearing its T-shirts marched in Havana's May Day parade carrying a banner supporting the Cuban Revolution. The Internet, even in a nation where access is far from reliable, offers another alternative and business owners are spamming cell phones and sending out blast emails. Castro, who theoretically took over for his despotic brother Fidel in 2008, opened the door for more small businesses in the fall of 2010. An estimated 371,000 licensed entrepreneurs have taken advantage, but with limited experience with capitalism after 50 years in a Marxist economy, progress has been slow and lurching. While marketing is not illegal, the state controls all newspapers, broadcast airwaves and commercial buildings and still will not accept ads. However, state telephone company Etecsa recently allowed small business owners to list and buy ad space in the yellow pages for the first time and Communist Party newspaper Granma ran guidelines encouraging entrepreneurs to create business signs, provided they don't block sidewalks or exceed 5 feet in length.  It’s quite a change from the collectivist society operating along the lines of thought be revolutionary icon Ernesto "Che" Guevara, who once called capitalism "a contest among wolves." Sorry, Che, but the times, they are a-changin’…………

- Maroon 5 sucks. They are a glorified man band with instruments and their preening, girly-voiced lead singer Adam Levine and his reality karaoke show-judging ways are ridiculous to the core. However, the masses love crappy, overproduced pop music and as such, the man band’s new track “Payphone” is generating plenty of buzz in Top 40 land ahead of its official release next week. What makes the situation incredibly ironic is that the track itself may reach the top of the singles charts before Maroon 5 has a chance to release it. The tacky cover band Precision Tunes has cranked out their own cover of the song and their take on the track is at No. 5 on the iTunes singles chart. The original version of the song features Wiz Khalifa singing alongside the ass-hatted Levine. Unofficial cover versions of songs are actually fairly common when an upcoming song has received a significant amount of airplay and there is high demand for the track, but is yet to be released. Record companies are clearly looking to build hype for a song and album with the tactic, but with more audio editing programs and easier access to technology making it simpler for would-be musicians to record and get their work out, rip-off covers of these songs pop up quickly. Labels often respond by rushing the release of the original, but Maroon 5’s version of “Payphone” has not veered from its scheduled release date. The cover version is the latest copycat effort from Precision Tunes, who have covered a range of crappy pop artists, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Usher…………

A place for the Bick, 911 for sando emergencies and snakes on a bus

- We’ve all be there. A trip through the ordering line at the local sandwich shop ends with a butchered order that doesn’t even remotely resemble what you ordered. It would have been just as effective if you had ordered in Yiddish. So what is a person to do with their mis-made sando? The obvious answer, as clearly demonstrated by Greatful Deli patron Rother McLennon, is pulling out your iPhone or Android and dialing those three numbers everyone knows to call in the event of an emergency: 911. McLennon was at the East Hartford, Conn. sandwich shop on Wednesday when his order of turkey, ham and cheese sando went awry. From there….well, let’s allow his now-legendary 911 call to tell the story. “I specifically asked for little turkey, and little ham, a lot of cheese and a lot of mayonnaise and they are giving me a hard time," MeLennon says on the call. "I wonder if you can stop by and just…” At that point, the 911 operator interrupts him just to clarify the reason for his call. “You’re calling 911 because you don’t like way that they’re making your sandwich?” the dispatcher asks. "Exactly,” says McLennon, clearly oblivious to the incredulity on the other end of the line. The quick-thinking dispatcher offered a reasonable solution that of course, McLennon had no use for. “So, then, don’t buy it,” the dispatcher countered. From there, a bigger issue came to the forefront. Undeterred by sound logic, McLennon explained that he was fearful the shop would not make his sandwich to his specific request in the future. “I mean, I just want to solve this the right way,” he said. “My sister made it, but she left. They are playing games with me, so I was just wondering if you could come by,” he said. “I just want it resolved and I want to be able to come back here and get the regular sandwich that I ask for.” At that point, the dispatcher should have hung up on him, but instead she reiterated the point that McLennon should simply not buy the sandwich. The shop’s owner, Tila Azinheira, claimed McLennon placed a phone order for 14 sandwiches and he then refused to buy them even though he was informed the shop could not take the sandwiches back because they were special orders. What a perfect example of why 911 exists……….

- Samuel L. Jackson, your next movie idea has been gift-wrapped by pure chance. What better role could there be for a man who fronted the single most obvious, true-to-title movies ever made, the horrifically unwatchable “Snakes on a Plane,” than the lead role of a movie set in Vietnam in which poisonous snakes escaped from a bag and slithered across the floor of a bus in the capital city of Hanoi? The incident occurred Friday, when six poisonous snakes got loose on the bus, sparking screams and leading to a hurried evacuation. No passengers were bitten by the snakes and a police officer said passengers and villagers killed all of the highly venomous kraits after the bus made a quick stop in Quang Nam province. There were 14 passengers aboard the bus, which was traveling from Quang Nam to Binh Dinh. The police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that a person who was not a passenger put the bag on the bus and paid the driver to transport it. The legality of that arrangement wasn’t immediately clear, but the sheer stupidity definitely was. Whether the snakes were supposed to be sold as pets, served as a delicacy the way snakes often are in some Vietnamese restaurants or used as an ingredient in traditional liquors, dropping them on a bus full of unsuspecting passengers and expecting them to stay inside a bag is imbecilic at best. If only Jackson had been there with a gun or machete to cope with the snakes, the problem could have been solved much quicker and with significantly less panic………

- PING! Yes sports fans, it’s time once again for the College World Series and the sounds of baseballs pinging off rocket launchers disguised as metal bats. This year’s CWS features two Cinderella stories making their first trip to the event, Stony Brook and Kent State. With both teams entering as decided underdogs against six other powerful opponents, the two squads will need all the support they can get and one of Kent State’s most famous alumni is doing his part to ensure that Golden Flashes fans can make the trip to Omaha. Cleveland Browns wide receiver and former Kent State quarterback Josh Cribbs has chartered a bus for fans to take to Omaha. "I'm going to do my part in sure those guys have a fan base out there cheering for them," Cribbs said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." Cribbs also purchased tickets to the Golden Flashes’ first CWS game on Saturday against Arkansas and a message on his website announced packages for $150 per person and including a hotel room on Friday night, beverages and snack on the bus. Cribbs didn’t say if he would be flying to Omaha for the game from Berea, where the Browns are wrapping up a mini-camp. "I'm trying to be there to support my team," he said. "I love that they're giving us something to cheer for, especially during this offseason." Kent State has ripped through national powers like Purdue and Oregon to reach Omaha, becoming the first Mid-American Conference team to make it to the World Series since Eastern Michigan in 1976. They earned their spot among the nation’s final eight teams with a 3-2 win on Monday night, beating host Oregon on a bloop double in the bottom of the ninth inning. Cribbs recalled watching the game on television while getting a message. "My masseuse was like, 'Do you want me to stop real quick? I was jumping around. 'They did it!" he said. "They had me on pins and needles. I turned back from the game, they were getting me too stressed out while I was getting stretched and massaged. It was too tense. Then when (Oregon) came back, I couldn't look. It was epic." Epic is a description rarely ascribed to college baseball…………

- Sun’s out, guns out. For Wayne Ivey, a former agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and candidate for sheriff in Brevard County, Fla., that slogan has taken on new meaning. Ivey is gunning for the top law enforcement spot in Brevard County and this weekend, his campaign will invite voters out for some sun-drenched fun with sniper rifles. The idea seems fairly illogical given that police spend much of their time dealing with crimes committed by people with guns, but in the quest to become sheriff, Ivey is firing all of the bullets in his clip. He has the endorsement of current Sheriff Jack Parker, who is retiring at the end of this term, but isn't resting on his laurels. The invitation has gone out for "Shoot with Wayne Ivey," an event billed as "Firearms, Food and Fun," all in exchange for a $25 campaign contribution. Those who want to come out and shoot the hell out of inanimate objects with their (potential) future sheriff need only bring themselves and their zeal for firearms to the west end of Timbers West Boulevard from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. There, they will be able to enjoy safety skills demonstrations, specialty weapons and a top shot competition. They can also squeeze off a few rounds with Ivey. But a Facebook user asked a good question on the event’s page: Will you need to bring your own ammo? The emphatic response: No, guns and ammunition will be provided. Awesome news, indeed. Oh, and no children under 15 will be allowed at the event, for safety reasons. Ivey is facing current sheriff's Lt. Todd Maddox in a primary election in August and the winner will face Democrat Adrian Moss Beasley, currently a Brevard County deputy, in November. Both men should be advised that Ivey is gunning for them……….

- Call Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger a realist or insist he’s missing the point, but either way, the tip-frosting Neanderthal of a rock frontman has admitted that his band has no chance of ever being nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nickelhack, which is universally loathed by critics and many music fans with vitriol normally reserved for international war criminals, released their seventh studio album “Here And Now” on November 21 last year. They have been targets for many of their peers in recent months, including The Black Keys, who said that they believed "rock n' roll was dying because people were OK with Nickelback being the biggest rock band in the world." Kroeger constantly answers questions about why people hate his band and maybe the lesson is finally sinking in – or not. "We may be dead by then but I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will probably show up the same time as our first Grammy," he proclaimed recently. The reference to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is interesting because on one hand, the Bick should not be anywhere close to anything that honors artists for good music. However, that’s not what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is about. It’s basically a punchline at this point, a catchall for artists who have sold a lot of albums, regardless of their genre. Rappers, disco artists and pop singers are all members of the hall and right around the time Donna Summer and the Bee Gees were inducted, the Hall lost all real musical meaning. So in that sense, it just might be the perfect place for Bickelnack. Kroeger also laughed at the petition Detroit fans started to prevent them from performing at halftime of the Thanksgiving Day NFL game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, conveniently ignoring the fact that the petition was the second such effort by fans of a professional sports franchise. The Bick is currently on the road torturing audiences/promoting “Here and Now” and will cross the Atlantic to torture British people with their music beginning October 1 at London's O2 Arena………..

Building with hemp, the end of "Weeds" and shutting down Bangladesh border crashing

- Stoners, time to find a new favorite TV show. No, “Planet Earth” isn't going away and won't any time soon, nor will “Beavis and Butthead” or “The Simpsons.” Instead, it’s Showtime's ground-breaking TV series "Weeds," which is coming to a close after eight seasons. After Starz announced the surprising end of its hit series “Spartacus” after four seasons, Showtime announced the demise of Jenji Kohan's acclaimed pot comedy. “Weeds” was something of a trailblazer that helped pave the way for other cable series on controversial subjects and vaulted Showtime into the battle of being a serious contender in the original series game. "There were two shows, 'Weeds' and 'Dexter,' that really got Showtime taken seriously for cutting-edge original programming," Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said. "How they get brought home is really important. In this case, both for the sake of the two women behind the show [Kohan and Golden Globe-winning star Mary-Louise Parker] and an audience that's really invested in the show. TV fans love nothing better than to complain about how shows end and we really want to end this one the right way." Kohan is understandably disappointed by having a burning slug fired into the back of the head of her creation, saying she's "sad" about the news but expressing appreciation for the rare opportunity to creatively wrap up a show. "I'm so proud of what we do here and that it's about a strong woman lead who's really flawed," she says of her protagonist, Nancy Botwin (Parker). "We get to do comedy right up against drama, which a lot of shows don't get the opportunity to do." In the final season of “Weeds,” Kohan will resolve this year's assassination attempt cliffhanger, then jump the show ahead in time a bit and find a creative way to conclude Botwin’s tale. However it ends, “Weeds” will always have the distinction of pioneering an edgy adult-cable programming renaissance. Parker has won a Golden Globe award for her portrayal of a suburban pot-dealing matriarch and she will continue to play that role as the final season of "Weeds" premieres Sunday, July 1 at 10 p.m. on Showtime……….

- While the conversation remains center on ganja, what better time could there be to talk about hemp? The out-of-date school of thought on hemp is that it is fodder for the bong, nothing more. Don’t try to sell that argument to activists attempting to strip federal regulations on industrial grade hemp. These hemp-heads are fighting an uphill battle and deep-seated misconceptions are undercutting their efforts. “You don’t want to tamp too much or we’re going to lose our insulation properties,” said Ken Anderson, whose company, Original Green Distribution, produces a building material known as HempStone. Yes, putting hemp and stone(d) in the same product name is asking for the requisite snickering, but hear Anderson out. He travels around instructing builders on the correct use of its product, which is a breathable material made of hemp fibers and lime that he pitches as a safer and more efficient alternative to conventional building materials. “Not only does it have great R-value, it also has thermal mass, which will then capture heat and bring it in when it’s cooler in the house and also transfer heat through the house,” Anderson said. For the construction ignorant, R-value is a measure of thermal resistance used in the building and construction industry. Its high (no pun intended) R-value makes industrial grade hemp as the perfect building material, according to Anderson. Additionally, high-grade hemp is non-toxic, mold and mildew resistant and non-flammable. A wall bolstered with industrial-grade hemp will not ignite even when the hot flame of a soldering torch is held to the surface for five minutes. By contrast, conventional building products can give off toxins like formaldehyde. Informed consumers are actually requesting their builders use hemp, often for the health benefits alone. Just as sturdy but seven times lighter than concrete, hemp makes good sense. The only drawback is the high cost of industrial-grade hemp, ironically restricting its use to some of the people least like to have encountered hemp in its most common form of use during their life. “Right now, because of the cost prohibitiveness, we have to sell to a higher end market, whereas this material should be available to everyone,” Anderson said. Blaze, er, build on, Kenny………….

- Maybe it’s simply time to abandon the quest to be perpetually tan. Not only are the sun’s rays harmful to human skin and health if absorbed in high amounts, and not only is throwing on a bathing suit and hopping inside a cancer box (a.k.a. tanning beds) a surefire way to up one’s chances for all manner of melanoma, but a panel of medical experts have warned that even spray tans could be hazardous to one’s health. These alarmist doctors say the active chemical used in spray tans, dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, can cause genetic mutations and wreak havoc on human DNA. They worry that customers could be inhaling the chemical into their bloodstreams during full-body spray tan sessions and become (possibly super-powered, superhero) mutants. “These compounds, in some cells, could actually promote the development of cancers or malignancies,” explained. Dr. Rey Panettieri, a toxicologist and lung specialist at the University of Pennsylvania. Panettieri (no relation to petite, über-hot actress Hayden Panettiere) and some of his comrades became alarmed about the dangers of spray tanning after reviewing 10 scientific studies of DHA. Although none of the studies involved actual human testing, the doctors are alarmed nonetheless. “What we’re concerned about is not so much that reaction that creates the tanning, but reactions that may occur deeper down with living cells that might then change DNA,” warned Dr. Lynn Goldman, the dean of the school of public health at George Washington University. “I’d be very concerned for the potential of lung cancer.” Tell that to the Food and Drug Administration, which approved the use of DHA in the 1970s as an ingredient in tanning lotions or creams. Naysayers would point out that salon-offered spray downs are not approved by the FDA. They would also warn spray tanners to cover their eyes, nose and mouth before getting orange-ed up. Either that or just learn how to accept one’s paleness………

- Eff you, world. Bangladesh has no use for you and your repeated pleas to allow in Rohingya Muslims displaced by sectarian clashes in Myanmar. The United Nations and other humanitarian groups can beg and plead all they way, but Bangladesh will continue to turn away these nomads and their boats at its borders. “It is not in our interest that new refugees come from Myanmar,” Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni proclaimed in Dhaka, the capital, on Tuesday. His words came after border guards “foiled two separate attempts of Rohingyas to enter” Bangladesh on Wednesday, and reportedly sent 70 people back to Myanmar. So far, border patrols have been ruthlessly efficient in turning back 1,500 Rohingya fleeing Myanmar in boats. For the bleeding hearts who believe that fleeing a nation where clashes between Muslims and the majority Rakhine Buddhist population, grow a pair and then we can continue the conversation. That includes the United Nations' refugee agency, which has called on Bangladesh to provide a haven for people fleeing the fighting in coastal Rakhine state, where rival mobs of Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims have burned homes and at least a dozen people have died. The rape and murder of a Buddhist girl, allegedly at the hands of three Muslims, last month sparked the current chaos and 10 Muslims have been lynched in the ensuing mayhem. Maybe there is some validity in Bangladesh’s logic…..after all, there are an estimated 800,000 members of the Rohingya minority and if Bangladesh allows one in, then they would have to open their borders to the other 799,999. The United States also piled on Wednesday, with State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland urging the country to accept refugees. Ditto for the Human Rights Watch refugee program, but all of these words have fallen on deaf ears………..

- Tim Tebow knew he would need his heavy armor in New York after the Jets traded for him earlier this offseason. Dealing with the New York media requires a thicker skin, but it’s what is under the skin that the Jets are apparently most concerned about. Already the most ripped quarterback in the NFL and looking like he’s going to turn green and tear through all of his clothes save a pair of magically expanding purple shorts, Tebow has apparently been asked by the team to pack on the pounds in preparation for his role in a Wildcat package. Tebow said Wednesday at minicamp that his weight is up to 249 pounds -- about nine pounds heavier than he played last season with the Denver Broncos. He explained that the team asked him to bulk up to 250 pounds for the season. "I'm trying to be in shape, be strong enough to do anything, but also fast enough to run around a little bit as well," he said. Maybe the Jets did it to convince fans and media that they really mean it when they say he will be the backup quarterback behind Mark Sanchez and will see about 20 snaps per game in the Wildcat role. Coach Rex Ryan further sought to head off any controversy when he warned that  "there may be a time" in training camp or the preseason when Tebow practices with the starting unit and even then, a team spokesman attempted to clarify his remarks, saying Ryan meant Tebow would take first-team reps in the Wildcat package, not the conventional offense. He could also be a weapon inside the 20 and give the team red-zone versatility with last season’s top receiving weapon, wide receiver Plaxico Burress, gone to free agency. In the meantime, new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano said his No. 1 objective, for now, is to make Tebow a better quarterback. That’s a worthy goal for a signal caller who completed less than half of his passes last season. Coincidentally, Sanchez has also bulked up to 230 pounds and insisted he's in the best shape of his life…………
