Nicki Mi-Nazi-j, Irish alcoholism abroad and fatties v. Victoria's Secret

- Is The Executioner finally D.O.A.? Bernard Hopkins is 49 years old and was just dominated for the first time in his career, falling in a unanimous decision to Sergey Kovalev Saturday in their light heavyweight title unification bout at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The fight was never close and for the first time, the oldest man to hold a major championship belt looked mortal. It was ironic because Hopkins has recently taken to calling himself The Alien and suggesting that he’s from another world. Instead, his immortal nature was shattered when Kovalev won all 12 rounds on all three judges' cards and Hopkins, who spent a large chunk of his young adult life behind bars, was never in the fight. The result left many questioning whether Hopkins would lace up the gloves again even after a post-bout interview in which promoter Oscar De La Hoya said he believed Hopkins would fight again. Ever the businessman, De La Hoya raised the possibility of a catch-weight bout with middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Yet when he was pressed on the subject afterward, Hopkins didn’t directly answer the question. "Asking me if I'm going to fight again right now is like asking a woman who just went through a nine-hour labor if she wants to have another baby," Hopkins said with a wry smile on his face. De La Hoya and Hopkins are business partners in Golden Boy Promotions and close friends, so maybe the promoter knows of what he speaks. "It's up to him and he has to think about it and decide what he wants to do," De La Hoya said. "But I think the kind of guy he is, he's going to want to fight again. And we could still do that Triple-G fight, absolutely." Of course you could, Oscar, because the dollar signs drive all………

- The defenders of fragile psyches and chubby people demanding that the world not notice they could stand to lose a few pounds are claiming victory once more. The latest row ‘twixt the chubby coddlers and the real world came, where else, on the battleground for body image that is Victoria’s Secret. You know, the brand that makes its name and its dollars on the backs, tightly toned asses, flat stomachs and lifted/separated racks of supermodels who walk the runways at fashion shows clad in diamond-encrusted undergarments while wearing stilettos and nary a blemish on their bodies. With that in mind, of course the ladies out there who have much more, um, padding on their physiques were bound to take offense when Victoria’s Secret hatched new ad campaign based on the slogan “The Perfect Body.” The bigger sticking point for the campaign amongst its haters seemed to be the accompanying image, which featured 10 smoking hot and very thin modes clad in bras and panties. That packaage drew the ire of those who started an online petition at Change.org and demanded that something be done, as long as that something wasn’t them eating less calories, exercising more and shedding their excess weight. Sadly, the terrorists have won. Victoria's Secret has reportedly dropped the “Perfect Body” slogan in favor of a new one, "A Body for Every Body." Below the slogan are the words, "Perfect Fit. Perfect Comfort. Perfectly Soft." The perfect theme also includes the phrase "perfect shape," although it's referring to a push-up bra instead of perfection in the form of the wearer. In response to the changes, the Change.org petition kook posted a message reading, "This is amazing news!" Not really, y’all. There still won't be any size-16 models strutting down the runway at the next Vickie’s Secret show…….

- The Irish like to drink. No one is disputing that fact, not with Jameson and Guinness being the two foundational blocks in the infrastructure of Dublin. Still, it probably isn't fair to pigeonhole Irishmen to the point that they’re being refused jobs on an international level due to their hard-drinking ways. That’s the claim being made by Katie Mulrennan, who showed all sorts of kahones by not only applying for a job on Craigslist, but applying for one that required her to cross multiple national borders and obtain a work visa in the process. Mulrennan, a teacher, applied for a teaching job in South Korea. That she didn’t get the gig isn't the most stunning development, even though she has taught English in Barcelona, Oxford, Abu Dhabi and South Korea. Her wealth of experience doing the very job for which she was applying could have been matched by other applicants. What she apparently could not overcome was the “alcoholism nature” of her people, which is what the employer cited in passing her over. "Usually when you apply for a job and they don't want you, they don't send a reply," Mulrennan said. "But this reply was a first. When I got the e-mail, it was so abrupt and short. I actually laughed when I read it initially." The email coldly informed Mulrennan that, "I am sorry to inform you that my client does not hire Irish people due to the alcoholism nature of your kind." Alrighty then. She has since found a new job, but more importantly, she has learned a valuable lesson about what it takes to succeed in the high-pressure world of international education………

- Nicki Minaj makes some sh*tty music, but is she genocidal dictator-level bad? Such is the question being asked, in a form, based on her recent lyric video for hew new track  “Only.” The clip, which helps introduce fans to a gawd-awful song that should be buried in a bunker like the one Adolf Hiter died in and the one from which Saddam Hussein was yanked, sees Minaj, Drake, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown (all in cartoon form) recast as Nazi-esque officers, with Minaj herself compared to Hitler. It does seem like a bit of a reach and not simply because Hitler had way more musical talent. No, critics have complained that making light of Hitler and the Holocaust in any way is disrespectful to, you know, the 6 million Jews who were murdered by Hitler’s regime. Neither Minaj nor the video's director Jeff Osborne have addressed the issue publicly, but they don’t need to. They’re getting exactly what they want and nothing they say is going to win over those they’ve intentionally offended, so why bother? Osborne has retweeted some of the angry responses he has receiver over the video, which features guest spots from Drake, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown. “Only” will appear on Minaj’s unimaginatively titled new album “The Pinkprint,” an unabashed rip-of Jay Z’s numerous “Blueprint” releases………

Halloween/ambulance ragers, doping in world-class badminton and movie news

- Two mighty blockbuster did battle and an oversized hero won the fight against a talent-deficient Texan with a moronically simply catchphrase at the box office this weekend. “Big Hero 6” triumphed in its debut, banking $56.2 million to edge out Matthew McConaughey’s “Insterstellar” for the top spot on the earnings list. “Interstellar” cranked out $50 million as both films made the first dent in the $165 million budgets both were made under. “Gone Girl” kept on chugging, moving up one spot in its sixth weekend to third place and adding another $6.1 million to its growing domestic total, which now stands at $145.4 million. “Ouija,” last weekend’s earnings champ in a low-dollar race, fell to fourth place with $6 million and has accrued $43.4 million in its first three weeks of release. “St. Vincent” also rose in the rankings, surging to fifth place with $5.7 million to pad its domestic take to a respectable $27.3 million in five weeks of largely limited release. Sixth place went to “Nightcrawler,” which saw its domestic money dip by 47 percent in its second weekend and earned $5.6 million for a two-week total of $19.7 million. The seventh-place slot belonged to “Fury” with $5.5 million and $69.2 million overall through its first month in theaters. Keanu Reeves’ limited acting skills weren't enough to keep “John Wick” out of eighth place thanks to a $4 million weekend. “Wick” has fought its way to $34.7 million in three weeks. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” had a good enough three days to bank $3.5 million and claim ninth place. Its $59.2 million domestic total in five weeks is respectable, if not very impressive. The final top 10 spot went to “The Book of Life” with $2.8 million and $45.2 million through four weeks. “The Judge” (No. 12) and “Dracula Untold” (No. 15) both tumbled out from last weekend’s top 10……….

- Riot Watch! Riot Watch! Romanians are rising up across Europe and they are unified in their ire against the establishment one week before a presidential runoff back home. Thousands of people protested against the government over the weekend, saying it was making it difficult for Romanians abroad to vote. Never mind the fact that these fools fled their home country and looked to make new lives elsewhere, dammit, they want to be able to freely and easily vote. Romanians rising up in Paris, London, Vienna and elsewhere have said they were unable to vote in the Nov. 2 first round of the presidential race because of long lines, which probably means they should have shown up sooner rather than assuming there would be a low turnout of the sort commonly seen in virtually every U.S. election, thereby allowing them to waltz in late in the day and get their “I voted!” sticker from the 97-year-old retirees manning the polling station. The Romanian government announced plans to open more polling booths and enact other measures to speed up the process, but incensed protestors decried the changes as insufficient to address their concerns. The protests also fired up back home in mother Romania, where about 5,000 people gathered in Cluj, and hundreds turned out in Bucharest, Constanta and other cities shouting "Get out and vote!" All of this anger is about the race in which Prime Minister Victor Ponta and Sibiu Mayor Klaus Iohannis will do battle, with Ponta favored to win the Nov. 16 vote. With 2 million Romanians living abroad and largely annoying the hell out of people in whose nations they’re squatting, figuring out how to get their votes registered is a complicated issue and one that will keep cropping up until it’s addressed for real………

- In the sphere of elite, world-class athletes, the best of the best will do anything to get an edge on their cutthroat competition. That includes the high-stakes world of professional badminton and that brings us to Badminton's top-ranked player and his alleged failed doping test. Lee Chong Wei failed a doping test, a senior Malaysian sports official said, and has been temporarily suspended pending a hearing by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) doping panel. It’s a scandal that threatens to rock the sport to its very foundations, what with the No. 1-ranked player in the world facing a potential two-year ban from competition. Lee is already reading from the handbook for athletes accused of using performance-enhancing drugs, insisting he has "never cheated." Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) deputy chairman Mohamad Norza Zakaria, who has the privilege of fronting an organization with a kick-ass acronym, confirmed that a test carried out on Nov. 5 in Oslo, Norway, on the "B" sample of an unnamed player had backed up the positive finding of the "A" sample from a doping control at this year's World Championships in August. He didn’t identify the player, but the name leaked anyhow. "This player is a very dedicated player and an exceptional individual," Mohamad said. "We believe this player has never resorted to shortcuts to achieve success." Maybe that’s what you believe, but the lab says otherwise and Lee’s story that the drug was last injected into him on July 18 for a thigh injury treatment, and that it was a "mystery" why it was found in his system after more than a month isn't exactly doing wonders for the two-time Olympic silver medalist’s image……….

- Now THAT is how you do Halloween. Stefan Sortland is a freshman at Colorado State University and he officially became a Halloween legend with his actions over the non-holiday weekend on and around the school’s Fort Collins campus. There is no other way to describe someone (allegedly) stealing an ambulance, going on an Ecstasy and cocaine bender at a concert and then attacking sheriff’s deputies in his intoxicated state once he was apprehended. Police reports detail Sortland’s path of destruction that began when emergency crews from Poudre Valley Hospital were treating an intoxicated student for seizures on campus in Fort Collins early Sunday morning. Seeing an opportunity placed in front of him and seizing it like a true champion, Sortland (allegedly) spotted the empty ambulance and leapt into action. When the emergency workers came outside and looked for the ambulance that, you know, should probably be where they left it, it was gone. The bad news for Sortland is that ambulances are equipped with GPS systems and that makes them relatively easy to find. Police from nearby Loveland found the abandoned vehicle in their jurisdiction, in the middle of Highway 34 with several doors open, heavy front-end damage and fluid leaking. A quick investigation unearthed evidence that the driver of the ambulance had hit the raised median, jumped the curb, hit a sign, went the wrong way and crossed back over the median before stopping. Sortland was located standing about 30 yards from the stopped ambulance wearing an EMT vest and when he refused to comply with officers’ commands, he got his ass Tasered. He was toting a blanket, a cell phone and a box of Wheat Thins with him and after refusing to answer officers’ questions, he instead asked, "Why are the lights flashing on the cars?" At the Loveland Police Department, he continued the party. According to the police report, he "stood on a bench, kicked the wall, and masturbated.” Not exactly having too much to drink and passing out drunk on the lawn in front of your dorm on Halloween, is it………

Strip clubs become churches, NOFX punts fans' faces and the battle for Catalan independence

-->
- Hey San Antonio, can we interest you in a winless NFL franchise whose recent history is steeped in ineptitude and who haven’t been a viable postseason contender in more than a decade? Think that one over because Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis is looking to bring his circus sideshow of a squad to your town. Davis met with a delegation of officials from San Antonio on Friday to talk about a potential move for the franchise and better still, he got San Antonio to hop on a plane to come talk to him. Former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros and other city officials traveled to the Bay Area for the meeting, four months after Davis visited is team’s potential new home city. ''We're going to present San Antonio's strengths and assets in the most persuasive way possible,'' Cisneros said. ''We have a very, very good opportunity to set it forth in a way the Raiders can digest.'' The obvious point to  make is that NFL teams make a sh*t-load of money no matter where they’re based (see, Green Bay, Wisc. or Buffalo, N.Y. for evidence). The counter point is that the money goes largely to the league and its owners, with a much smaller chunk making its way to anyone who doesn’t own a private jet or two vacation homes in the Caribbean. In other words, San Antonio should prepare to shell out a lot of money to build a new stadium should the Raiders move there and bide their time playing in the Alamo Dome while their shiny new football palace was built. The Raiders’ lease at the Oakland Coliseum is up at the end of the current season and Davis claims his first choice is to remain in Oakland. He is, however, willing to play a high-stakes game of pitting the city against new suitors in his quest for a new stadium and see who will allow him to make the most money possible………..

- And now, it’s time to hear from the other side. For months now, the campaign for Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia to break free and become an independent nation has been heating up. Protests have been staged, fiery speeches have been given and ultimatums have been thrown down. The national government has insisted that there will be no secession and that any vote for such a move would be illegal, but the government has been the primary voice against Catalan independence….until now. An organization that opposes plans by the region hold an informal independence poll has held protests in several cities across Spain and the biggest such display took place in Madrid, where a relatively modest crowd of several hundred people meekly listened to Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa read out a statement describing the poll as disrespectful of "the rule of law or the true will of the people." The opposition group, called Libres e Iguales (Free and Equal) includes politicians, intellectuals injecting their thoughtful input into the mix. The impact of the anti-independence movement hasn’t been overwhelming and protests like the one in Madrid or another in the Catalan city of Girona proceeded peacefully, which is clearly no way to create or sustain a revolution. Thankfully, a demonstration in Barcelona had some minor violence when pro- and anti-consultation supporters threw hands and forced police to intervene. Sadly, this has been the apex of the rage so far and this entire scenario is becoming a real yawner………

- NOFX lead singer Fat Mike is not a guy you want to mess with mid-show. We’re not talking about aiming a laser pointer at his face, hurling a half-empty beer can at him mid-song or heckling him from the mosh pit, although based on what went down at a show Down Under this week, it might be high time to rethink all of those actions as well. Fat Mike was doing his thing, playing quality punk rock during a gig at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney when a beered-up fan wearing a bucket hat jumped on stage and decided to pretend he and the lead singer were cool by putting his arm around Fat Mike’s neck. That would have been offensive under the best of circumstances, but the singer had told the crowd earlier in the show he was suffering from neck pain. Having his pain compounded by the drunken antics of some random dude not sober enough to realize what a colossal ass he was being, Fat Mike responded with a spinning forearm to the fan’s face and once that rendered the poor sod stage-bound on his ass, Fat Mike mixed in a punt to the head while the fan was down. The entire display unfolded so quickly and violently that it’s worth watching the video several times just to enjoy it. The only thing the fan, named Alex, deserves credit for is tweeting Fat Mike after the show to apologize, admit that he had been drinking heavily and therefore drunkenly forgot the singer's neck was hurting. It doesn’t excuse to ass-hatted behavior, but credit for owning it and letting the world know who you are so proper mockery can ensue……..

- If God truly are wherever the faithful assemble, than the Almighty is about to make a prolonged stop at the Athens Fantasy World and Chelsea’s Gentleman’s Club. A church in the area near the now-closed strip club has a vision to take a place one occupied by drug-addled skanks grinding on filthy brass poles and turn it into a place where God-fearing worshippers can kneel before the Lord. Soon to be gone are the platforms, the bar, the waterbeds and the glorified hookers in G-strings….just as soon as the unnamed church can raise the money to make the changes it envisions. The club was once a place of debauchery on Baxter Street, including being an alleged brothel. The non-denominational church that has bought the property has just 50 regular members, so turning around a place that has seen multiple arrests over the years for prostitution, rape, drugs, stabbings and counterfeit bills will take time. “Obviously it was a place for the sex industry,” church member Mary Redman said. “Sometimes people get on paths and they maybe don’t even know why they’re doing what they’re doing. We’re not here to judge anyone or to pass judgment on what happened here. Maybe it was a place where people came because they just didn’t know where else to go.”  Redman and her husband David believe the club is an ideal space for such a transformation in a community that has seen some hard times of late. The church estimates that it will take in excess of $1 million to fully overhaul the building an unless each of its members are able to scratch checks for $20,000 or so, that’s going to mean a whole lot of fundraising and even more faith………

PGA Tour gay slurs, NFL cheerleaders turned statutory rapists and Brian May's rich guy excess

- Let the legal festivities begin, Spain. A Spanish judge has cleared the way for Princess Cristina, the sister of Spain's king, to be tried on tax fraud charges as the next step in a landmark investigation affecting the royal family. The hero in this case is Judge Jose Castro, whose next move is to decide over the coming weeks whether to formally indict the princess. The investigative judge may not be able to do so because the state prosecutor and tax authorities say there is no basis for tax fraud charges against her, but the mere prospect of putting a member of the royal family on trial is intriguing in and of itself. Cristina’s lawyers argued that Spain's Supreme Court has ruled that people can't be tried on tax charges if neither the prosecutor nor tax authorities present charges, but that legal argument did not dissuade the Palma de Mallorca court. In making its decision, the court rejected appeals against the princess being listed as a suspect in a corruption and embezzlement investigation centering on her husband, Inaki Urdangarin. Castro noted that the princess is suspected of two counts of cooperation in tax fraud, although he did drop a possible charge for embezzlement against her. Urdangarin, who is suspected of embezzlement and fraud, has also yet to be formally charged. Urdangarin’s alleged indiscretions center on him using his Duke of Palma title to embezzle about 6 million euros ($8 million) in public contracts through the Noos Institute, a nonprofit foundation he and a business partner set up to funnel money to other businesses, including a company he owned with his wife. Not behavior becoming of the sister of King Felipe VI………

- Musicians have a special bond with their instruments. The best of the best tend to be even more particular about their axe, drums, bass, keyboard or brass. Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May is no exception and when he boarded a British Airways flight from London to Los Angeles, there was no way he was going to allow his beloved electric guitar to fall into the bumbling hands of the airline’s baggage handlers. May, rolling deep with cash and in his affection for his instrument, elected to pony up $15,000 for an extra first-class seat for his guitar and traveled with the instrument by his side rather than allowing it to linger with the golf clubs, overstuffed Samsonites and pet carriers in the luggage hold underneath the plane. May built the guitar, known as The Red Special, at his father's workshop 40 years ago and it has been a staple of Queen's music ever since. A member of May’s entourage and the guitar were bumped to first class prior to the flight and when it became clear that he was one of those travelers trying to jam a too-large item into the overhead compartment and holding up his fellow travelers like an a-hole, May bought the extra seat for the guitar. The trip to the U.S. isn't a long one and before long, May will dishonor both his axe and his legacy when he and his band reunite with former “American Karaoke” contestant Adam Lambert for a series of shows in the United Kingdom. The two sides announced the mini-tour in September, with seven gigs starting in Newcastle on Jan. 13 and ending in Nottingham on Jan. 24, with stops in Glasgow, London, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham in between………

- Somewhere in Delaware is a 15-year-old boy who will a) be a legend among his friends for a long time and b) may have some emotional and psychological baggage to go with his hero status. On the one hand, that boy will be celebrated among his teenage friends because he hooked up with an NFL cheerleader, fulfilling the pipe dreams of thousands of other teenage dudes across the United States in the process. At the same time, having that sort of extended sexual relationship with 47-year-old Molly Shattuck, who was indicted on rape and unlawful sexual contact charges in Delaware stemming from several alleged incidents involving underage boys and alcohol, could be a bit much for the brain of a 15-year-old boy to process. As much as the boy’s friends may want to high-five him, odds are that Shattuck’s friends are not so eager to congratulate her for cheating on her ex-husband, a prominent energy executive, with some high school kid. The indictment alleges that Shattuck provided alcohol to three boys under the legal drinking age on Aug. 30 and Aug. 31 and after a couple days of booze and the chicanery that comes with combining alcohol and underage drinkers, the alleged sexual contact with the boy in question occurred on or about Aug. 31. Shattuck once made headlines for being the oldest cheerleader for an NFL team, but any pride she took in looking good enough to twirl pom-poms on the sideline in skimpy outfits so grown men in replica jerseys could ogle her has to pale in comparison to what she’s feeling right about now. She’s a national punch line, she’s been forced to resign her position on the board of a local arts high school and she’s staring down prison time and the joys of being a sex offender in prison………

- Maybe it was wrong to say that professional golf was about to fade into months of irrelevance and the snippy social media exchange between English star Ian Poulter and now-former PGA of America president Ted Bishop a couple weeks back was merely extending the sport’s time in the spotlight by a few days. Clearly, the players of the PGA Tour still have something left in the tank for 2014 and are determined to end their season on a high note. Take Patrick Reed, for example. Reed caught some heat for brashly pressing his finger to his lips in Scotland to quiet the Ryder Cup crowd in the midst of yet another European ass-kicking of the United States, but he chased that ridiculous display with an even better one at the HSBC Champions, where he dropped several profanities and a nice gay slur on live television for the ones and ones of people actually watching the HSBC Champions. The incident came during the 10th hole of the opening round at Sheshan International after Reed missed a 5-foot putt. Microphones picked him up using the F-word twice and capping it off with a gay slur in a fit of rage over his three-putt bogey. It was so obvious that Golf Channel analyst Frank Nobilo immediately apologized to viewers and after the round, Reed pretended to have forgotten what he said until someone brought it to his attention. When he did and after he had a day to process, Reed issued a fairly bland apology that didn’t do much to make anyone forget what happened. “I made a stupid error," Reed said. "Sorry for definitely the words that I said and everything that went on. Never should have happened. Unfortunately, it happened to me, and all I can do is just learn from it and move on, hopefully continue playing well and keep giving fans something to watch." Reed said he sought counsel from Bubba Watson, who was caught on camera using the F-word in the second round of the U.S. PGA Championship in August, and will try to move on from the incident as Watson has done………

Uruguayan excess, AC/DC murder plots and whining Euro soccer managers

- Bitter down, English national team soccer coach Roy Hodgson. You might be the manager for a nation that was once a world power but doesn’t compete for much of anything that matters these days, but even you aren't bigger than the global corporate titan that is the NFL. Hodgson has his knickers in a bunch over his nation's Football Association allowing an NFL game to take place just a few days before his team plays Slovenia. Hodgson is b*tching about Wembley Stadium hosting an NFL game on Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars play the Dallas Cowboys, marking the third such contest at the iconic venue this season. London is filled with promotional posters in the city centre and big team banners stretch across the walls down Wembley Way and Hodgson is pissy because he worries the game could ruin the grass just six days before England plays Slovenia in their Euro 2016 qualifier. His whining mirrors complaints by his predecessor, Fabio Capello, but since Capello registered his complaints the association laid down a new 250,000-pound Desso pitch four years ago. The field has held up well, but Hodgson claims it has deteriorated of late and will get worse with another NFL game. "I can't pretend that is something that makes me leap for joy," Hodgson said. "If I was asked if it was a good thing or not, I would have to say not. I don't really think you could expect me to say 'excellent, delighted, well done'. The pitch, unfortunately, is not in the best of nick anyway, which we're all a bit unhappy with." He added that the grounds crew will have to "work their socks off" to ensure the grass is in optimum condition by the time the game against Slovenia kicks off and wants the FA board to prevent England from playing on an uneven surface because of the NFL games in the future……….

- The concept of online privacy clearly has not dawned on many in this digital world of ours and in spite of constant warnings and reminders that anything a person puts online is both impossible to erase and almost as impossible to protect, fools keep on having personal photos and video exposed for the world and acting shocked. Count the Thomas family of Chester County, Pa. in that number. The family posted a photo on their blog and didn’t think much about it…until they saw their unmistakable likeness showing up on advertisers and direct mail pieces around the world. “We had photos online and never thought anything like this would happen,” Kristen Thomas said. That’s because you and your clan are naïve fools, K.T. Thomas first learned about the problem when someone told her that her family’s photo was on a David Kessler campaign ad that was mailed to voters. That seemed odd because she did not know Kessler, a candidate for state representative in Pennsylvania’s 130th district, nor did anyone in her family give him permission to use their photo. Kessler claimed that his campaign got the photo from the free stock photo website imgion.com, but Thomas countered that neither she nor the photographer who took the shot submitted the photo to the website or gave it permission to use the photo. She believes imgion.com stole the 2009 photo from her blog, but there is much more to the story. The photo has also appeared in a wide range of advertisements selling everything from Microsoft products to Italian pet tracking devices and Egyptian sunscreen, “Who knew we were in the sunscreen and infertility business?” Bryan Thomas. Imgion.com could be in deep sh*t here, as the site does not post any terms and conditions or restrictions and doesn’t make any claims that it has any rights to the photos it posts………

- Uruguayan President Jose Mujica is a bona fide baller, but even ballers have to scale down their game at certain times. In the spirit of, you know, not looking like a self-important douche living high on the hog while many of his people reside in poverty, Mujica has magnanimously put his blue 1987 Volkswagen Beetle on the auction block. According to el presidente, he has received a million-dollar offer to buy his ride and thereby expunge what has become a symbol of the his ostentatious lifestyle. Once nicknamed "the poorest president in the world," Mujica is reportedly staring down a $1 million offer from an Arab sheik, but is pretending to be indifferent about it all. "That's what they said to me, but I didn't give it any importance,” he said. The potential for selling the car reportedly came during an informal conversation in which Mexico's ambassador to Uruguay suggested to Mujica that he auction the Beetle in Mexico and predicted he could get 10 four-wheel-drive trucks for it. The former leftist Tupamaro guerrilla leader then said if he received $1 million for the car, he would donate the money to a program he supports that gives housing to the homeless. If the offer of trucks came through, he proposed giving them to Uruguay's public health office or his campaign workers. Ever the politician, Mujica claimed he would gladly auction the Beetle because he has "no commitment to cars" and he joked that he didn't sell it because of his dog Manuela, famous for only having three legs. "Human beings have a bit of fetishism; we need certain material symbols,” Mujica said of his whip. "They are little things to the world, but are worth a lot to you." The world came to know Mujica when he assumed Uruguay's presidency in 2010 and declared that his entire wealth amounted to the 1987 Beetle. That proved to be a campaign lie when official declarations of his wealth showed that he puts his total wealth at $322,883, with a flower farm he owns reportedly worth $108,000. A politician lying about his net worth is so rare that all of this has to be terrible shocking to Uruguayans……..

- Insert your AC/DC song-based joke of choice here and we can then get going on the iconic rock band issuing a statement regarding the arrest of drummer Phil Rudd on murder plot charges. The   60-year-old Rudd had been charged with attempting to procure murder, which basically means dude tried to hire a hitman to make someone go away on a permament basis. He is als charged with possession of the drugs methamphetamine and cannabis and aside from the bizarreness of a world-famous rock star being so angry or so troubled by something that he felt the need to try to off someone, the entire scenario is diffuclt to fathom on any level. Yet here the band are, trying to figure out how this happened and what theyr’e going to do after losing their second member in a matter of months. "We've only become aware of Phil's arrest as the news was breaking. We have no further comment. Phil’s absence will not affect the release of our new album ‘Rock or Bust’ and upcoming tour next year,” the band said in a statement. Rudd has been released on bail after his appearance at Tauranga district court, but the band seems to be moving on without him already. He was taken into custody arrested after police received information that led them to raid his home. Police reportedly received an anonymous tip and went from there. Amazingly, Rudd is facing only a a jail sentence of up to 10 years if found guilty. Court documents detail how Rudd tried to hire one person to kill two other men and perhaps the band’s relative indifference to his plight comes from the fact that they already kicked him out once, back in 1983. He rejoined AC/DC in 1994 and has been with them ever since. This all comes after guitarist Malcolm Young left the band due to medical issues, removing one of its original members from the mix………

Joss Whedon gets pissy, magnet trains in 'Merica and Mikhail Prokhorov v. Jason Kidd

- The 1800s are alive and well in South America. The Salem witch trials may be a thing of the past in the United States and every other corner of the civilized world, but such bass-ackwards thinking still prevails in some far-flung corners of the globe. That’s very much true in Paraguay, where a indigenous woman was burned alive after being accused of witchcraft, a local prosecutor confirmed Wednesday. Prosecutor Fany Aguilera said that members of the Mbya Guarani ethnic group tied supposed practitioner of the dark arts Adolfina Ocampos to a wooden pole and shot arrows at her before they burned her alive. Her execution came one week after she was sentenced to death last week by the community's chief in Tahehyi, a village some 180 miles north of the capital, Asuncion. No one is sure of the exact date of the execution, but that hasn’t stopped the government from pressing on with the case. Aguilera has charged nine men in the village with first-degree murder and to their credit, these socially stunted imbeciles have already acknowledged killing the woman. This killing would come as a surprise if not for a report by the UN Refugee Agency which estimates that thousands of people worldwide are accused of being witches every year. According to the UN, these accused witches are often abused, cast out of their families and communities and sometimes killed. Such incidents are not common in Paraguay, where aid groups say they rarely hear of such situations. In response to the killing, the state agency for the protection of indigenous peoples said in a statement Wednesday that "although the indigenous communities are ruled by customary law, their acts cannot violate the constitutional rights of respecting the life and the liberty of people." In other words, welcome to the 21st century, b*tches……….

- Be wary, Jason Kidd, be wary. Kidd may have tried to channel his inner “Godfather” when he looked to stage a coup in the Brooklyn Nets front office and seize power from general manager Billy King to expand his power from that of a head coach, but Kidd’s power trip led to his exodus from the borough and a clear rift with the powerful (and towering) Russian who used to be his boss. Kidd, now the head coach of the mediocre Milwaukee Bucks, offended many within the Nets organization with the way he elbowed his way out the door and no one is more bitter, it seems, than owner Mikhail Prokhorov. "I think there is a nice proverb in English: Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord has split you," Prokhorov said before the Nets' home opener against Oklahoma City at Barclays Center on Monday, a 116-85 win. "So I think that each side, we did what we thought was the best and I like what we have now.” Prokhorov reserved his strongest and most cryptic words for when he was asked if he was angry at Kidd over the way the situation played out. "I think we shouldn't get mad. I think we should get even. And we will see it on the court,” Prokhorov said. On the court or in the back alley behind a club with a couple of 350-pound Russian henchmen and their lead pipe friends, right Mikhail? The remarks were the first time the über-tall Russian magnate spoke since Kidd was given permission to talk to Milwaukee and ultimately traded to the Bucks for two second-round picks this past summer. Prokhorov, who spent a record $90.57 million in luxury taxes alone last season, has made waves behind the scenes for his consideration of selling his controlling interest in the team, but as long as he owns the Nets, it’s safe to expect that his despisal of Kidd will remain simmering hot…….

- Want to live in Washington, D.C. and work in Manhattan? Then get on board with a group of private investors seeking to do what the federal government has been trying to pull off for years: bring super fast trains to the United States. The perils of rush hour traffic and having to live reasonably close to your place of employment would be a thing of the past if these forward thinkers were able to both figuratively and literally get their plans off the ground. The group’s plan calls for 300-mile-per-hour train that floats on magnets to run from downtown Washington, D.C., to Manhattan. It would slice the time of Amtrak's Acela service by two-thirds and delight a whole lot of rich, powerful people who shuttled between the two major metropolises. "You could live in Baltimore and commute to New York City faster than you could from Connecticut," said Wayne Rogers, head of Northeast Maglev, the group championing the project. "It changes real estate prices, how people live, where they work. It really changes the world." The train is based on a Japanese technology known as magnetic levitation, which is a fancy way of saying that in stead of wheels riding along a rail, maglev uses powerful, electrically charged magnets to suspend the train midair inside a U-shaped guide rail built on either side of the track. Those magnets both lift the train and propel it forward and the train moves faster because of the reduced friction. Amazingly, this technology has actually been around for over a century and Japan has had an operational test track for years. So what’s holding this rail-based rodeo back? Northeast Maglev estimates the New York to D.C. route could cost over $100 billion, with much of that money to be spent on tunnels and elevated track necessary in such a densely populated area -- possibly tunneling under cities and then running over or adjacent to Interstate 95 in more rural areas. In an effort to get the project started on a micro level, the company is striving to construct a 38-mile section from the Baltimore airport to downtown D.C. within the next 10 years. They’ve collected $40 million in funding from U.S.-based private investors and have applied for permits from the state of Maryland. Oh, and there’s an additional $5 billion in funding from the Japanese government promised. Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, former New York Governor George Pataki, and former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle are members of the group’s board, but those power players and  $10 billion in federal dollars appropriated for high-speed rail doesn’t mean this will happen any time soon……….

- Someone’s feeling a little pissy, eh “Avengers” director Joss Whedon? Whedon, who presided over “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and is undoubtedly anxious to keep the project’s details under wraps until its April 24, 2015 release, has admitted that he has half a mind to ream out Idris Elba about an incident in which the actor leaked the fact he will appear in the movie. Whedon said any message he would send to Elba would  "an attitude of scold.” Elba can be forgiven for his slip in a sense because he was merely hanging out with a bunch of glow-stick-wearing tweakers this summer during a residency DJing in Ibiza and accidentally mentioned afterward that the residency caused scheduling conflicts with the movie. Oh, and he mentioned that he will appear in scenes alongside Tom Hiddleston's Loki. Until Elba brought those issues up, no one knew about his cameo and Whedon clearly wanted to keep it that way. "Should he receive an email from me, there might be an attitude of scold," Whedon fumed. “When you have a cast of 19,000 people, inevitably, once every month, you pick up [a story] and you're like, 'Awww.’" Yes, awww indeed. Elba, it is now known, plays the character of Heimdall, while Hiddleston is the better-known Loki. Both characters have appeared in the “Thor” films, while Loki also appeared in “Avengers Assemble.” “Ultron” will unite Robert Downey) Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America) Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), under the leadership of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Idris Elba will be in it too…….

Blaming Walter White, Israeli soccer riots and campaign mail where it belongs

- Bad postal worker or hero to us all? That question is up for debate after a postal worker in Neenah, Wisc. was placed under investigation for allegedly not delivering political mailers. This would-be hero is suspected to be responsible for the U.S. Postal Service finding 879 pieces of campaign mail in a dumpster last week and that didn’t sit well with candidate Mike Rohrkaste, who said a voter showed him hundreds of his campaign flyers stuffed into a dumpster at the Foxwood Crossing Apartments in Neenah. The fliers were connected to three separate Republican campaigns and given the deluge of campaign mail and ads that voters are overrun by in the weeks leading up to elections, the mailman responsible for the massive mailer dump should be hailed, not harangued, right? “It’s obviously very disturbing, I paid to have these delivered. I wanted to get my message out to the voters of the 55th District,” Rohrkaste said. The candidate said he paid $5,000 to get that message out and seeing his fliers where they were going to end up anyway but simply put there by a different person enraged him. He snapped a few pictures and called the local post office. “They had a supervisor out within a half hour. This supervisor, she took a lot of pictures, actually got into the dumpster. She collected all the documents. It was filled up with boxes, and then she took them with her,” Rohrkaste added. The fact that a government employee moved that quickly AND got into a dumpster is a minor miracle, so that was another great result of this mess. The USPS said it is investigating the matter, including why no Democratic flyers were found………

- Being smart and solving problems are valuable skills to have for a hockey goalie. So is understanding the rules and realizing that blatant cheating in front of dozens and dozens of fans and the opposing team won't work even if it seems like a good idea in the moment. Meet Bridgeport Sound Tigers goalie David Leggio, who may not make it to the NHL any time soon – or ever – but did provide a memorable moment in an American Hockey League game against the Springfield Falcons when a challenging situation came his way and he reacted the way a desperate man might be expected to react. With his team locked in a close game, Leggio found himself facing a two-on-none break. Laden with all of his goalie padding and realizing that he had little chance of outwitting and outplaying two streaking forwards aiming to put the puck in his net, Leggio had two options. He could man up, face the challenge and do his best, or he could intentinally knock his net out of place to force a stoppage in play. Being the courageous soul he is, Leggio chose the second option and play was indeed stopped. However, the referees awarded Springfield a penalty shot as a result of the Bridgeport goalie's actions and this time, the net stayed in place. Leggio did not and stopped the penalty shot, which would have been a linchpin moment for a big win had the Falcons not won the game anyhow, downing the Tigers 4-3……….

- Fights and injuries from fights are an everyday occurrence in the Middle East. However, these brawls are  typically religious and deeply cultural in nature, featuring Jews and Arabs going at each other over centuries of hate, killing and bitterness. None of those were in play Tuesday when rival Israeli football fans brawled outside a Tel Aviv courthouse that was extending the arrests of other fans who had stormed the field and halted a league match. Video from the scene showed what looked much like an actual soccer game – minus the 90 minutes of boring action as dudes run around on a big grass lawn not kicking the ball into the goal – with fans flailing wildly on the street and hitting each other with belts and sticks for several minutes. It was a continuation of rising soccer violence that resulted in the abandonment of Monday night's game between local rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld confirmed that six people were arrested following Tuesday's street fight and said police would investigate the video further to determine if additional arrests were needed. The drama began when Maccabi and Hapoel were tied at 1-1 in the first half and a shirtless fan ran onto the field and began hitting and kicking Maccabi midfielder Eran Zehavi. This standard soccer hooligan had been arrested 11 times for acts of violence, so it should surprise no one that he crossed the goal line and kicked Zehavi after he had tied the score with a penalty kick. Not satisfied, this hooligan then taunted the Hapoel bleacher section by simulating gunshots toward them. Zehavi responded with a shove to the throat of Alroee Yadai, who threw an errant punch before Zehavi landed the final blow, a flying kick that ended the fight as security and other players intervened. Amazingly, the referee then showed Zehavi a red card and the game continued before more fans stormed the field, chaos ensued and the game was halted. The violence, though, not so easy to stop……….

- Walter White’s influence knows no bounds. He’s gone from our lives in terms of new episodes of “Breaking Bad,” but he’s still making waves in society. There’s the drama over action figures from the hit AMC drama being sold at Toys ‘R Us and now, some European professor is accusing the show of being responsible for the rise in crystal meth use in Britain and Europe. Acccording to statistics from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, attempts to smuggle the drug into the United Kingdom have risen 400 percent in the past year while seizures of the drug have quadrupled. Why anyone needs to import crystal meth rather than find a filthy basement and the cheap collection of chemicals and equipment needed to make the white trash drug of choice is unclear, but professor Ellis Cashmore, an author on celebrity and media culture at Staffordshire University knows who’s to blame for all of this. "Although the show does not go out to glamorize the drug, its very inclusion promotes interest in that substance,” Cashmore said of “Breaking Bad” and its influence. "The fact it is a central premise to almost the entire series would serve to boost this interest for people who perhaps had not encountered it before. We live in a hedonistic generation where people are seeking pleasure from various sources, and increasingly these are be found in the most illicit forms. Even if a TV show, like Breaking Bad, portrays drugs in a negative aspect and showing its most destructive side, it will still appeal to somebody.” Sorry E., but this who notion of pawning blame for societal ills off on TV shows, movies, music and video games is lame, tired and out of date. The 17,000 Brits believed to have used crystal meth in 2013 aren't doing so because Walter White made it cool. They’re doing so because they are people struggling in life and making poor choices because of it………

Mexican jumping bean BOMB BOMB BOMBS!, Swedish rock and roll rage and billboard homes for hobos

- Two months ago, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was enjoying life after football, possibly by going down to the local park and looking to concuss total strangers with blindside hits just for the hell of it. But the Steelers coaxed the 36-year-old out of retirement and on Sunday night, he stepped back into one of the hardest-hitting rivalries in the NFL when the Steelers took on the Baltimore Ravens. As usual, there were scores of hard hits, but one made more waves than the rest and it had the loquacious Harrison pointing fingers and throwing around accusations like nobody’s business in the aftermath. Harrison, who has made a career out of dirty hits and borderline felony assaults on the field, blasted Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs for a hit from behind on Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount, saying it appeared that Suggs was trying to injure Blount. It’s a comment worth considering because if anyone knows what a hit intended to injure its target looks like, it’s Harrison. "That was unnecessary," Harrison said after the Steelers powered on for a 43-23 victory. "That looks like you're trying to hurt somebody. I believe there will be a fine.” The hit came in the third quarter, when Suggs arrived late and delivered a low shot on Blount. He didn't hit Blount's knees but did receive a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness. Harrison, who has amassed fines of more than $100,000 in his career and was suspended for a game in 2011 for repeat violations of a rule that prohibits helmet-to-helmet hits and unnecessary roughness. "I don't know what [Suggs] was doing," Blount said. "I don't know what he was thinking. He's known to be a dirty player.” Ravens coach John Harbaugh rallied to his guy’s defense, calling Suggs “a very respected player in this league” and said the linebacker was merely trying to get Blount to the ground. Sure thing, all……………………

- How many times have you seen a billboard by the side of the road, totally ignored its message because who the hell cares about billboards anyhow, but thought, “Man, that’s a place where we could totally stick a person who has nowhere else to live?” Thankfully, there are men like Michal Polacek around to take these nebulous idea and turn them into realistic plans that better the world. Polacek has come up with “Project Gregory” would create wooden billboard structures fitted with noise and thermal insulation as a source of housing for the homeless. These makeshift homes would have two rooms, one with a table, bed and two chairs and the other a bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower -- all in less than 200 square feet. This all grew out of Polacek’s master's dissertation at the Academy of Art in Banksa Bystrica, Slovakia, about three years ago. Because he doesn’t speak English, he enlisted the help of Matej Nedorolík to assist with communications and together, the duo runs their own architecture and design firm. Like anyone who has a good idea but little money, they decided to capitalize on their concept using a crowdfunding website. Project Gregory launched as a Kickstarter campaign to raise 41,000 euros (roughly $50,000) to build a prototype for the billboard homes and the goal is building the prototype by next spring. From there, 10 homes would be built in Slovakia and advertising on the homes would go for 150 euros a month, according to the project's Kickstarter page. The structures would be connected to the nearest city’s water and electricity grids and because billboards are wired to stay lit at night, they'd be able to optimize energy use. "We'd like to spread it to other countries," Nedorolík said. "The whole idea is that after [the funding is raised], the project will be able to develop itself." With 4 million people homeless across the European Union, it’s an idea worth chasing, even if the companies Nedorolík and Polacek initially contacted about investing selfishly passed on the idea………

- You may not know who Swedish rockers Refused are, but you should care that they’ve given one of their members the boot. Why should you care? Because not many bands fire one of their members and then have said member go on a social media rampage in which he or she lays the remaining members of the group out and proceeds to throw them under the bus, back the bus up over them and run them over a second time. Enter former Refused axe man Jon Brännström, who broke the news that he was out as lead guitarist on Saturday with a scathing message on the band’s own Facebook page in which he says he was not given a reason for his firing and that he no longer considers the band members his friends. By the way, did anyone consider changing the password on the official band Facebook page once Brännström was fired? Ya know, in case he was a disgruntled rock star who wanted to excoriate his former friends for all the world to see. "I was fired from Refused a while ago. I wasn't given a reasonable explanation and wasn't even invited to sit down and talk about it, so I'm not completely sure why they decided to go on without me,” Brännström wrote in his post. "We've always been better at punk rock than democratic processes and dealing with conflicts, so I guess I'm not too surprised it went down like this. Quite sad indeed, but perhaps it's all for the best.” Brännström then took a passive aggressive swipe at the band by noting that he has "always been more interested in writing music than reproducing it" and that he "used to be proud to call these people my friends." Rather than do the obvious and simply delete Brännström’s harsh words, the band tried a carefully worded, bullsh*t diplomatic statement that read: "Any collective effort will have its ups and downs, and when people really pour their hearts into something, things get complicated. We cut ties with Jon already in 2013 because he did not share our passion for the band. We don't know why he decided to emit this narrative on Facebook or why he did it now, instead of just calling one of us up, but we wish him the best in his future endeavors." How’s about everyone stop being polite and start getting real……….

- America, we’ve come to a dark place, a world wherein we can no longer safely mail frijoles saltarines to one another and be confident that low-level government employees will leave them alone. Frijoles saltarines, for the record, are Mexican jumping beans. They’re what was inside a “ticking” package a U.S. Postal worker delivering mail in Carlsbad, Calif. reported to authorities. The drama began with a package that appeared normal, but could have been a merchant of death and therefore, several homes were evacuated and residents were warned to stay away as investigators blocked off the 3600 block of Glen Avenue around 3:20 p.m. The San Diego Sheriff’s Bomb and Arson Unit was called to the scene and using their years of incendiary device expertise, they took a mere three freaking hours to determine that the package was safe and could be opened. Once the package was pried open, police found the beans, which are actually pods with larva of a small moth inside. When they heat up, the pods move. This entire incident should be a bad joke, but maybe it’s just the impetus the USPS needs to add an entry to its list of items that a person cannot mail, right alongside any actual bombs or bomb-related materials, weapons and other hazardous items including chemicals. Just scrawl Mexican jumping beans on the list and make sure that all of your employees receive proper training to handle such terrifying items. They could be the ones to help avert these sort of non-disasters in the future……….

L.A. becomes Hello Kitty Land, Indiana basketball goes preseason DUI and movie news

- Who was going to see movies this weekend? No, that’s not a rhetorical question. It really is worth asking who went to see movies this weekend because based on the earnings numbers, there were few enough butts in theater seats that counting everyone and getting names shouldn’t take long. “Nightcrawler” topped the earnings list in its debut with $11 million, but it was an underwhelming debut for Jake Gyllenhaal’s much-hyped new movie. Reigning earnings king “Ouija” slid to second place by the slimmest margin with $10.9 million and through two weeks, the horror movie made for $5 million has earned $35 million domestically. “Fury” stayed third for the second weekend in a row with $9.1 million, giving the World War II-themed movie $60.4 million in its first three weeks of release. “Gone Girl” kept being present in the top five with $8.8 million in its fifth weekend for fourth place, giving one of the top earners in recent months $136.6 million through five productive weeks. In fifth place was “The Book of Life,” which raked in $8.3 million and has a three-week tally of $40.5 million. It was a steep fall for “John Wick,” owner of sixth place with $8 million as it fell off 44 percent from its opening weekend and has snagged $27.5 million in two weeks in theaters. “St. Vincent” was next in seventh place as it added 270 theaters and earned $7.7 million for a four-week domestic take of $19.5 million. Eighth place and the award for most interminably long name both went to “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” with $6.5 million and a cumulative domestic total of $53.6 million. “The Judge” rose one spot to ninth place thanks to a $3.4 million weekend, giving Robert Downey Jr.’s latest $39.5 million overall. The last top 10 spot went to “Dracula Untold” with $2.9 million, good for a running tally of $52.8 million. “The Best of Me” (No. 11) tumbled out from last week’s top 10………..

- It’s that time again and the world is once again better for it. Spain’s sheep-herding protestors are back and boy, are they a sight for sore eyes. This has become something of an annual tradition, the sight of shepherds guiding a flock of 2,000 sheep through Madrid's streets in defense of ancient grazing, droving and migration rights increasingly threatened by urban sprawl and modern agricultural practices. Granted, the world pretty much forgets about these guys before the last pile of sheep turds have been scooped up off the streets of the Spanish capital, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a special treat for tourists and locals to see the capital's traffic cut to allow the ovine contingent to bleat its way through town, bells clanking past the many iconic locations throughout the city. Shepherds paused at the town hall for a symbolic gesture as the chief herdsman handed authorities 25 maravedies — copper coins first minted in the 11th century — as payment for the crossing. It was an anachronistic display that fit perfectly with the spirit of the day and with that pointless task complete, the sheep parade continued past central Puerta del Sol square and the Bank of Spain headquarters on their way to Retiro Park. Some of Spain’s herding routes have been used annually for over 800 years and Madrid’s urban sprawl has consumed one that dates all the way back to 1372, more than a century before that directionally challenged dolt Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Here’s looking forward to next year’s sheep march, which remains Spain’s coolest parade even though no candy is involved and unwanted manure is dispersed throughout Madrid’s lovely streets in its aftermath……..

- College basketball season isn't off to a flying start for the Indiana Hoosiers. Tom Crean’s crew has yet to play a regular-season game, but one of their players has already turned in one of the biggest bonehead moments of the year. Enter freshman Emmitt Holt, who was over the legal limit for blood-alcohol content for someone under the age of 21 – 0.025 at the age of 18 – who has been cited for illegal consumption and operating a vehicle under the influence after plowing over teammate Devin Davis, leaving Davis hospitalized with a head injury and the Hoosiers with a major headache. . The school released a statement that Davis was injured after being struck by a vehicle driven by Holt just moments after exiting it, noting that Davis was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and is listed in serious condition. Holt was cited for illegal consumption and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content above 0.02. According to Sgt. Jeffery Canada of the Bloomington Police Department, Holt and passengers in his SUV told police they had dropped Davis off in the parking lot outside the stadium about 12:45 a.m. Saturday. As those inside the car explained it, Holt was driving away "when, for unknown reasons, Mr. Davis came into the roadway and struck the side of the vehicle near the front passenger windshield.” When police arrived, they e found Davis unconscious with a head injury on the street just off campus. Holt’s Jeep Liberty had sustained damage to its passenger side, front fender and windshield, Canada said. Both players are 6-foot-7 forwards who weren't expected to be major players for IU, but Crean called off Saturday's open practice and scrimmage in light of the incident. Way to keep the eyes on the prize, fellas……….

- Los Angeles remains a ginormous freak magnet and no one really expects that to change any time soon. The question is merely which freaks are in town for their convention on a given weekend and this time around, it was the grown men and women who worship at the altar of a cartoon cat that wears an omnipresent pink bow in her hair and could have well been drawn by a 7-year-old on her lunch break after making a prescient pudding-for-fruit-roll-up trade in the cafeteria. Yes, it was the first-ever Hello Kitty convention in the City of Angels to celebrate the global cartoon sensation’s 40th birthday. Sadly, it wasn’t just schoolgirls with Hello Kitty backpacks crowding the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles, but rather a motley crew of adults and children with neither self-respect nor dignity who were trying to get inside for a look at the sold-out event featuring merchandise for sale and even a tattoo parlor. By the time the event came to a close Sunday night, it had drawn some 25,000 fans and even worse, this debacle was merely a harbinger of something much dark and sinister looming on the horizon. Yes, there are already plans for Hello Kitty’s world tour next year. “For the first-time ever, there’s going to be so much eye-candy and so much to see and do and take pictures of. If you love Hello Kitty, you’re going to be very, very happy,” David Marchi of Sanrio, Inc. Eye candy? Dave-O, if you think of Hello Kitty as eye candy, then there is little hope for you in a world where actual eye candy abounds and people with a modicum of self-worth can find non-humiliating things to get tattooed on their bodies in places where the population isn't comprised primarily of 9-year-old girls in pigtails………

Lights out in Bangladesh, Ozzy Osbourne's next move and 911 gives rides home from McDonald's

- No one was happy with what they saw from the NBA’s new super team on Thursday night, but perhaps no one was fierier than the man tasked with overseeing the overhauled Cleveland Cavaliers. David Blatt had not yet won his first NBA game, but he had no problem ripping his team a new one after they lost 90-85 to the woeful New York Knicks in the wildly overhyped and over-celebrated return of LeBron James to Cleveland. The supposedly all-time great offense in the making the Cavs would have with James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving playing together was moribund most of the night and rather than have a normal shootaround before the tail end of their back-to-back against the Chicago Bulls on Friday, Blatt elected for a nice ass chewing for his star-studded roster. "You all are such nice people, I'm so happy you weren't in the morning meeting today because your opinion of me might be vastly different right now," Blatt said. "But we cleaned some things up, and the guys responded beautifully and we played a great game." Coaches often chew out players in team meetings when sh*t goes sour, but they typically don’t bring it up with the media or admit that they reamed their team. Considering that Blatt was still hours from his first NBA win and that he called out James in the meeting, his actions took serious kahones. "He just got on us," James said when asked about Blatt's message. "He got on us from the time we started our meeting to the time we left. And it's great. For a team like us, we need that.” It’s a move that can’t be constant or even repeated on a consistent basis because such tactics wesr on players, but for a coach early in his tenure it was a bold stroke aimed at setting a tone for what Blatt wants his team to be……….

- Everyone has a slightly different use for 911. For example, some people call it when a fire or other disaster strikes their home and they need immediate assistance from first responders. Others dial the number when they or someone with them is the victim of a violent crime and the police are required on location. Then there is Spring Hill, Fla. resident Rodni Brown, who not only doesn’t know how to properly spell one of the more common names in American English, but was also in a tough spot that no average man was qualified to handle. Brown has ventured down to a local fine dining establishment known as McDonald’s and after getting his fill of $1 cheeseburgers and non-chicken chicken nuggets, he found himself at a crossroads. He needed to get home and because he did not have a vehicle to drive home or money for bus fare, he had to improvise. At that point, he could have dialed a friend and asked that friend to come pick him up. He could have asked a stranger for money to ride the bus. Brown rejected those options and chose his third one, which involved dialing 911 and concocting a story about an emergency at his home that he had to get to immediately. Deputies said Rodni Brown told dispatchers while at the restaurant on Spring Hill Drive that his home located at 10443 Abbeville Street was on fire, but that wasn’t entirely true, mostly because it wasn’t true at all. When firefighters showed up at the home, there was no fire and after Brown got a ride home from police, he was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail. How this was going to end any way other than badly for Brown is something only he can explain, but this moron may not have the brain power to do so………

- The crazy train is about to become a solo ride. Black Sabbath will release its final album in 2015, leaving its aging members to figure out their respective next moves. Each has plenty of options, but the one who will draw the most attention is the least coherent among them, frontman Ozzy Osbourne. As Sabbath readies the follow-up to its 2013 album “13,” Osbourne is making plans to venture out on his own once again. The drug-addled, mumbling rocker has confirmed that he will continue to release music once Black Sabbath split and said he has already begun work on his next solo album. “[This will be] our last hurrah...Then it's no more Sabbath at all. We're disbanding the name and everything. They don't want to tour anymore. I get it. But I love it. I'm gonna continue my solo thing," Osbourne said. Not only does Osbourne have new material in the pipeline, but he says it will sound distinctly different from his work with Sabbath and if one can believe a guy who has shot, snorted or smoked every illegal substance he could access for four-plus decades, it will actually be much sunnier. “Black Sabbath is slow and demonic; Tony Iommi is untouchable for that kind of stuff. My stuff is more melodic, more structured of a song,” Osbourne said. “It's more kind of rock than doom-y music. It's happier, kind of." When their final album drops, Black Sabbath will have released 14 studio albums over a 46-year run, most with their current lineup of Osbourne, Iommi and third original member Geezer Butler on bass………

- Does anyone have a match, Bangladesh? If so, keep it handy because you’re going to need it. While most people look forward to the weekend because it’s a respite from the grind of the work week, those people typically do so with the expectation that they won't spend their weekend in the dark. That hasn’t been the case for residents of one of Asia’s smallest nations, where the state power company says the country has been hit with an electricity blackout after a transmission line bringing power from neighboring India failed. Bangladesh began importing electricity from India last October 2013 through a 400-kilovolt transmission line that runs from Baharampur in the Indian state of West Bengal to the southwestern Bangladesh town of Bheramara, but Bangladeshi officials have to be having serious second thoughts about the arrangement at this point. One year of semi-reliable power isn't exactly what any nation sigs up for, given the amount of money changing hands her. Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd. Managing Director Masum-Al-Beruni, who should probably work on shortening his company’s name once this crisis is over, said the blackout hit around noon Saturday and covered all parts of the country connected to the national grid. Restoring power to an entire country takes time, so maybe pour one out for Bangladesh over its wasted weekend and hope the next one is better for all involved in this forgettable frame……..

#NFLersvsTwittertrolls, UPS driver rage and Burkina Faso gets a coup!

- Sh*t is getting real in the West African nation of Burkina Faso, where the military has seized control of the government and President Blaise Compaore has resigned after 27 years in office. Building unrest came to a head Thursday when the military rose up and flexed its armed muscle by staging a coup and imposing a dusk-to-dawn curfew in what one general described as an effort to protect lives and restore order. This is all bad news for the West, which has looked to Burkina Faso as a key African ally in the fight against al Qaeda. Protests against the government spurred the coup, with the riots reaching their apex when demonstrators bum-rushed the Parliament and set fire to the building. Gen. Honore Nabere Traore claimed the military takeover was in the best interest of the country's citizens and supported by "national and international opinion.” "An interim authority will be set up in order to prepare the conditions for the return to normal constitutional order within a period of 12 months at the latest," Traore said. Compaore’s whereabouts weren't immediately known, but within 24 hours he was stepping down after asking in a government communiqué read on national radio for an end to the violence. Before exiting stage left, he also withdrew a proposed constitutional amendment that included a provision that would allow him to seek another term in office, according to the communiqué. That was a solid move, as people generally don’t enjoy someone they’re trying to oust from power inviting himself back for a few more years at the helm. It was an ironic twist, given that Compaore took power following a bloody coup in 1987. The rage extended to Bobo-Dioulasso, the country's second largest city, where rioters reportedly tore down a statue of Compaore. The invasion of parliament came as lawmakers were set to vote on a motion to allow Compaore to extend his 27 years of rule and as trying to turn the building into a pile of smoldering ash is typically a good way to delay any legislative action, the vote never happened………..

- Arcade Fire are the sort of self-important indie rock hipsters who adopt alternate personas and crank out Halloween horror movies about the fictional death of their über-arrogant frontman, so why not unleash “Feisti” on the world? The Canadian indie rock auteurs marked yesterday’s non-holiday by releasing a short horror film for Halloween featuring James Murphy, Fleet Foxes and The National. The project was released under one of Arcade Fire’s many aliases, “Noreen Bauble,” and this self-indulgent work of not-really-art is a special 21-minute long film billed as "a look back at [Arcade Fire's] 2011 summer festival tour.” All of its action is set at frontman Win Butler's 27th birthday, when what should be a joyous occasion takes a spooky turn as Butler's fate is taken for a cruel ride by the 27 Club. That’s when the band sees themselves woven into a poorly spun and shallowly developed tale of murder, mystery, gore and the ghost of late Doors frontman Jim Morrison. Murphy appears on screen as a depressed DJ who probably forgot to take another pop of Ecstasy before his set, while Fleet Foxes capably fill roles right in their acting wheelhouse as bearded singers at the club. Andrew Garfield does a turn reprising his role as Spiderman and to bring some quality ‘80s cheeseball-ness to the screen, Peter Gabriel hits like a sledgehammer – hey oh – as a security guard, with members of The National posing as creepy twins. All in all, it’s 21 minutes of your life you’ll want to have back and yet another reason to believe no one is more full of themselves at the moment than Butler and his bandmates………

- Many people hate their jobs. Not all of them resort to physical violence on inanimate objects as a means of relieving their rage. At least one soon-to-be-fired UPS driver in Westbury, N.Y. definitely does believe in beating the holy hell out of non-living items incapable of fighting back and he showed it after a delivery gone wrong. The driver attempted to make a delivery to East Hills Instruments, but employee Ray Martel informed him that the company could not accept a package requiring cash on demand. At that point, it wasn’t as if the driver had done anything wrong and had he merely returned the package to his truck and continued with his route, his day would have scarcely been affected. That was not the route he chose. No, this rage-aholic took out his frustration on the package, flipping it over and booting it better than Sebastian Janikowski ever could. Not satisfied, he went Pete Weber on it, doing his best bowling motion to inflict additional damage. “He kind of one-hands it and then the kick and then the Pelé-style soccer kick,” Martel said. The best part of the entire scenario is that the package was clearly marked as fragile and yet, it made no difference. The scene played out on a security camera and Martel watched it from inside the building when his assistant alerted him to what was going on. “He did it in plain sight,” Martel said. “He does it right in front of the camera. I mean, who does that? We have a hand truck he could have used. He has one. I know they all have one in their truck. But I guess laziness got to him.” Laziness, rage issues, a lack of professionalism….or all of the above. So what was in the box? Nothing much, just a $12,000 nitrogen calibration system. Oh, and Martel warned the driver that the package was delicate. UPS spokesman Andy McGowan addressed the matter. “UPS does not condone this specific driver’s behavior,” McGowan said. “We are investigating the issue and will take corrective action with this driver.” It’s unclear how firing this driver immediately is going to correct anything that went wrong here, but it’s worth a try……….

- New York Jets receiver Eric Decker is a member of one of the worst teams in the NFL. He might want to take that as a cue to keep his head down and avoid anything on social media that might provoke or provide fans with a chance to tell him how much he and the Jets suck. For example, one of the highest-paid players on a 1-7 squad should not be tweeting out a message asking fans to let him know why they love the Jets and hitting their response with the #diehardjetsfan hashtag. That initial tweet might have been sent with the best of intentions by the $36 million wide receiver, but like the terrible Twitter campaign Florida State staged a few weeks back allowing fans to ask questions to polarizing quarterback Jameis Winston, this train went off the rails quickly and it ended with Decker’s wife country music singer Jessie James Decker, trying to fight back an angry Twitter mob with a virtual broom and some angry words. The drama began Wednesday, when Decker sent out his initial tweet in the aftermath of a six-turnover loss to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday. Toss in general manager John Idzik’s bizarre news conference in which he rambled and stammered in an effort to paint a rosy picture of the team’s future and things got really hot, really fast. Decker’s message generated a slew of snarky, sarcastic tweets and his lady was having none of it. "You think he really cares what y'all think haters? He's laughing his ass alllll the way home ... Life is pretty good here, can't complain," Jesse James Decker retorted. She deactivated her account, which only emboldened her old man’s 382,000 followers. In the aftermath, reality began to set in on Eric Decker, but he still seems to think he didn’t do much wrong. "Obviously, everyone's entitled to their opinion. I don't think it's against the law to try to unite or reach out to fans. When you're in the position you are, people obviously enjoy winning a lot more than losing -- I get that -- but they still love the team aspect,” he said. Whatever makes you feel better, E………
